Chapter 5 - The Trap Springs Shut

The next morning, the sun rose over the Sterling estate in a blaze of brilliant gold, but the air inside the grand house was ice-cold.
At 8:45 AM, Grant Sterling stood at the head of the long mahogany conference table in his primary office. Sitting around the table were three top corporate attorneys, two federal cybercrime investigators disguised as board members, and Arthur, the head of IT.
The projector screen behind them displayed a live data-tracking dashboard.
"She's accessing the localized sandbox server right now," Arthur whispered, typing rapidly on his laptop. "She bypassed the primary firewall using the backdoor embedded in the painting's transmitter. She's downloading the file."
Grant stared at the screen. A progress bar was creeping steadily across the monitor.
10%... 45%... 80%... 100% Complete.
"The file has been successfully exfiltrated to an external IP address," Arthur announced, his voice tight. "Tracing the destination... Routing through three proxy servers in Zurich, Cayman Islands, and finally... a private data server registered to Vanguard Global Investments."
One of the federal investigators leaned forward, his eyes narrowing. "Vanguard Global. That’s the front company for Julian Vance. Vance has been trying to hostile-takeover Sterling Tech for three years through corporate espionage and illegal market manipulation. We've been trying to link him to a mole inside your inner circle for eighteen months."
Grant felt a cold weight settle in his chest. Julian Vance. A ruthless corporate raider who stopped at nothing to destroy his rivals. And Vanessa had been his operative all along.
"Let's move," the lead investigator said, standing up and buttoning his suit jacket.
Three seconds later, heavy footsteps echoed outside the office door. The door swung open, and two uniformed security guards stepped inside, flanking Vanessa Croft.
Vanessa looked immaculate in a cream-colored silk blouse and tailored trousers. But as her eyes swept the room and landed on the federal investigators, the color drained entirely from her face. Her mask of effortless grace cracked wide open, revealing sheer, unadulterated panic.
"What is... what is the meaning of this?" Vanessa stammered, her voice losing its musical cadence, turning sharp and shrill. "Grant? What are these men doing here?"
Grant stood up slowly from his desk. He didn't look angry anymore. He looked entirely calm, wrapped in an impenetrable armor of absolute clarity.
"The game is over, Vanessa," Grant said, his voice echoing off the dark wood paneling. "You downloaded the file from my desk at 8:46 AM. Except it wasn't our trade secrets. It was a digital tracking beacon packed with encrypted malware that instantly locked down Julian Vance's servers and broadcasted your entire communication history straight to the Department of Justice."
Vanessa staggered backward, hitting the edge of the bookshelf. Her hands trembled violently. "You... you set me up."
"No," Grant corrected coldly, walking around the desk. "You set yourself up. The moment you hung a camera in my office and sold my life's work to Julian Vance, you signed your own warrant."
The federal investigator stepped forward, pulling a pair of gleaming steel handcuffs from his belt. "Vanessa Croft, you are under arrest for industrial espionage, wire fraud, and conspiracy against a federally protected enterprise. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law."
As the cold steel clicked around her wrists, Vanessa turned her head. Her eyes locked onto Grant with a look of pure, venomous hatred. Then, her gaze shifted past him, landing on the small figure standing quietly in the doorway.
It was Maya.

Vanessa's lips curled into a snarl. "You," she hissed. "You little rat."
Maya didn't flinch. She simply looked back at Vanessa with steady, unblinking eyes, remembering her grandfather's words: Real danger smiles first. But truth always has the last word.
