Chapter 7 - The Journey to Recovery

Back at the hospital and later during our first weeks at home, Toby’s recovery was a slow, courageous battle. The physical scars on his palm were healing slowly under the expert care of burn therapists, but the psychological scars required even more tender, patient love.
Every time Toby flinched at a sudden noise or looked nervously at his bandaged hand, my heart broke all over again. But Marcus and I made it our absolute mission to surround him with unconditional safety, warmth, and joy. We turned our living room into a fortress of happiness. We bought him new, larger toy trucks, set up an indoor art studio where he could paint to his heart's content, and spent hours reading his favorite adventure stories before bed.
One Saturday morning, about two months after the incident, Toby looked up from a Lego castle he was building with Marcus. His bandage had finally been replaced by a thin, protective skin-guard, and he was gently flexing his fingers.
"Mom? Dad?" Toby asked softly, his big eyes looking up at us.
"Yes, buddy?" Marcus answered, setting down a brick and leaning in close.
"Do we ever have to go to Grandma Beatrice's house again?" Toby whispered, a flicker of genuine fear crossing his young face.
My heart ached, and I immediately knelt beside him, wrapping my arms around his small shoulders. "Never, my sweet boy. You will never, ever have to see her again. Nobody will ever hurt you like that again. I promise you with all my heart."

Toby buried his face in my neck, wrapping his arms around me—using both hands, gripping tightly. A wave of profound relief washed over me. He was going to be okay. The terror was losing its grip on his imagination, replaced by the unbreakable security of a family that truly loved and protected him.
While Toby healed at home, the legal system was moving swiftly toward its inevitable conclusion. The District Attorney’s office had accumulated an airtight case. With the high-definition smart-doorbell footage, medical records, forensic analysis of the barbecue tongs, and corroborating statements from officers, there was zero room for the defense to maneuver.
