Chapter 5 - The Hospital Room and the Investigation

By the time our ambulance arrived at Saint Jude’s Pediatric Burn Center, the medical team was already waiting in bay four. They worked swiftly, gently removing the field dressing to assess the full extent of the damage across Toby’s palm.

I held my son’s uninjured hand, whispering comforting stories, kissing his forehead, and fighting back waves of fresh tears every time he whimpered in his sleep from the throbbing pain. The burn specialist, a kind-hearted pediatrician named Dr. Vance, looked up from his chart with a grave expression.

"The burns cover roughly sixty percent of his right palm," Dr. Vance explained quietly, keeping his voice low so as not to startle Toby. "Fortunately, it’s a deep second-degree burn rather than third-degree, which means the nerve endings are still intact—hence the intense pain. With proper treatment, specialized skin grafts, and extensive physical therapy over the next few months, he should regain full functionality. But the emotional trauma... that’s going to require considerable patience and professional support."

Hearing those words felt like a physical blow to my chest. My sweet, gentle boy, who loved nothing more than building blocks and drawing pictures with crayons, had been maimed by his own grandmother simply because she preferred another child.

Ten minutes later, the door to the private recovery suite opened softly, and Marcus walked in. He had changed out of his dust-covered uniform jacket into a clean shirt, but the exhaustion and grim determination etched into his features were unmistakable. He walked straight to the bedside, gently stroked Toby’s hair, and pressed a tender kiss to his cheek before pulling up a chair next to mine.

"How is he?" Marcus whispered, his voice thick with emotion.

"He's resting, but he wakes up crying every time the pain medication wears off," I whispered back, my voice breaking. "Marcus... what’s happening back there? Where is my mother?"

Marcus’s expression hardened. "She’s currently locked in a holding cell at the county precinct. The District Attorney took one look at my body-cam footage and the smart-doorbell video stream, and she personally authorized a multi-count felony indictment. Beatrice is being charged with Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury, Intentional Child Abuse, and Tampering with Evidence."

I gasped, covering my mouth with my hand. "Bail?"

"Denied," Marcus replied firmly. "Given her total lack of remorse, her verbal statements on the scene attempting to justify the torture, and the clear flight risk presented by her panicked attempt to intimidate witnesses, the judge remanded her without bond pending trial."

"And my father? And Cynthia?" I asked, feeling a cold numbness wash over me.

"They're currently being investigated as well," Marcus answered steadily. "Cynthia is facing child endangerment charges for bringing her aggressive, out-of-control son into an unsafe environment and encouraging the toxic hierarchy. And Richard? His financial accounts and past business dealings are being looked into by the state fraud division after several relatives, desperate to save their own skins, started spilling secrets to my investigators about how Richard helped cover up family liabilities for years."

The house of cards my parents had built on favoritism, bullying, and silent complicity was finally collapsing from the top down.
