Chapter 3 - The Tables Turn

"Marcus..." I choked out, the overwhelming relief finally breaking through my shock.

Marcus stood up slowly, and the transformation in his demeanor was terrifying to witness. The loving husband and doting father vanished in a heartbeat, replaced by a seasoned, elite law enforcement officer who had just witnessed his only son being brutally assaulted by his own grandmother. His eyes swept across the gathering of thirty relatives, and not a single person dared to meet his gaze.

"Secure the perimeter," Marcus commanded without breaking eye contact with Beatrice. "And call the medical transport unit immediately. I want a full forensics team on this patio within ten minutes."

"Right away, Chief!" an officer barked, immediately pulling out his radio and moving to block the exits.

Beatrice’s face drained of all color, her arrogant facade crumbling into jagged pieces of panic. She pointed a trembling finger at Marcus, her voice cracking. "Marcus! You listen to me right now! You cannot arrest your own family over a little family discipline! That boy was being a disruptive nuisance—"

Marcus didn't yell. His quiet, chilling tone carried across the entire silent yard. "Discipline? You pressed a red-hot piece of iron into the palm of a seven-year-old child." He took a slow, calculated step toward her. "That isn't discipline, Beatrice. That is aggravated felony child abuse, intentional torture, and assault with a deadly weapon."

"She's your mother-in-law!" Cynthia shrieked, stepping forward to defend the matriarch. "You can't treat her like a common criminal! It was an accident! Jax fell, and—"

"Shut up, Cynthia," Marcus interrupted, his voice dropping an octave, filled with such lethal authority that Cynthia instantly flinched and stepped back. "I saw the security footage. My detail tablet streams the live feed from the smart-doorbell camera straight to my phone. I watched the whole thing unfold from down the street before we even turned the corner. I saw Jax shove past Toby. I saw Toby do nothing. And I watched this monster," Marcus pointed directly at Beatrice, "deliberately walk over to a live fire, pick up searing metal, and burn our son."

The extended relatives began murmuring frantically among themselves. Several aunts and uncles who had stood by indifferently suddenly looked nauseous, realizing the gravity of what they had witnessed and tried to brush off.

"Marcus, please," Richard interjected, trying a different tactic, stepping forward with a placating smile that didn't reach his terrified eyes. "Let's not be hasty. We can handle this internally. You know how family gatherings get. Emotions run high. Let's sit down, have a drink, and—"

"You watched him scream, Richard," Marcus said, his voice cutting through Richard’s words like a razor. "You took a sip of your beer while your grandson’s flesh was melting. That makes you an accessory to child abuse and depraved indifference under state law."

May you like

Richard staggered backward as if he had been physically struck, the color draining entirely from his face.

Before anyone else could muster a defense, the blaring sirens of an ambulance wailed down the street, turning the corner and pulling up directly in front of the house. Paramedics spilled out of the back, rushing through the open gate with a medical kit and a pediatric burn stretcher.
