Chapter 6 - The Fallout Among the Relatives

Word of the arrest spread through the extended family wildfire-style. By Monday morning, my phone was incessantly buzzing with notifications, missed calls, and panic-stricken text messages from aunts, uncles, and cousins who had previously ignored me or treated Toby as invisible.

Aunt Linda: "Clara, honey, please tell Marcus to call off his hounds! This whole thing is getting blown out of proportion. We're family! You can't let your mother rot in a jail cell!"

Uncle Greg: "Clara, your father's health is failing under this stress. Drop the charges, and let’s handle this like a normal family dinner dispute. Think of the family name!"

I didn't answer a single one of them. Instead, I blocked their numbers one by one, feeling a profound sense of liberation with every swipe. For years, I had tolerated their emotional abuse, their constant comparisons, and their toxic enabling of Beatrice and Cynthia just to keep the peace. I had let them make Toby feel like he was second-best. Never again.

On Tuesday afternoon, a high-priced defense attorney hired by Cynthia—using funds siphoned from a joint family trust Richard controlled—attempted to file a motion for a preliminary injunction, claiming that Marcus was using his position as Chief of Detectives to maliciously prosecute an innocent elderly woman.

The motion was thrown out of court within twenty minutes. The presiding judge, a respected jurist known for zero tolerance on domestic violence, issued a blistering public statement: “The judiciary will not entertain frivolous claims of familial privilege when confronted with the calculated, brutal torture of a defenseless seven-year-old child.”

Television news crews picked up the story. Local news outlets ran investigative segments on "The Dark Side of Family Reunions," featuring blurred footage of the backyard barbecue, the police response, and Beatrice being led away in handcuffs. The public outcry was deafening. Neighbors and former acquaintances came forward with stories of how cold and domineering Beatrice had always been, shattering the facade of the "respectable Texas family" my parents had meticulously maintained for decades.

Meanwhile, Cynthia found herself completely ostracized. When she tried to drop Jax off at school, other parents formed a human wall, refusing to let their children near him, citing his violent history and unchecked aggression. Cynthia’s husband—who had been away on a business trip during the reunion—returned home, saw the news coverage, watched the security footage, and immediately filed for divorce, taking full custody of their finances and demanding psychological evaluation for Jax.
