Chapter 6 - The Web Unravels

The revelation sent shockwaves through us. Evelyn Sterling wasn't just an overbearing mother; she was a cold, calculating sociopath who had murdered her daughter-in-law for control of a multi-million-dollar estate, and was systematically doing the same to her own grandson.
"I'm going to kill her," Gabriel said, his voice terrifyingly calm as he stood up from the porch bench.
"Gabriel, stop!" I jumped up, grabbing his hand, pulling him back. "If you go after her now with violence, she wins. You'll end up in prison, and Oliver will have lost both his parents."
Gabriel stared at me, his eyes storming with wrath and agony. "She murdered Victoria, Claire! She spent three years smiling at me over dinner while feeding my son poison! How am I supposed to sit here and do nothing?"
"We aren't doing nothing," I said fiercely, squeezing his hand tightly, pulling him toward me until he was forced to look into my eyes. "We are going to bring her down completely, legally, and publicly. We are going to strip her of her name, her freedom, and her power. But we have to set the trap properly."
Gabriel breathed heavily, fighting the war inside his chest. Slowly, the wild fury in his eyes began to settle, replaced by trust as he looked at me. He raised our joined hands and pressed a firm, desperate kiss to the back of my hand.
"Tell me what to do," he requested softly. "I'm yours."
We spent the next twenty-four hours orchestrating a sting operation with Detective Miller and the Chicago Police Department.
The plan was simple yet dangerous. Gabriel would call Evelyn, acting completely distraught, pretending that Oliver had suffered a massive relapse and was in critical condition at the private sanctuary estate. He would tell her that the doctors didn't think Oliver would make it through the night, subtly hinting that he needed his grandmother by his side.
Narcissists like Evelyn cannot resist the urge to oversee their grand design, nor can they resist playing the grieving relative to secure their victory.
At 8:00 PM, a sleek black town car pulled up to the gates of the sanctuary estate.
Evelyn Sterling stepped out, wearing a sharp dark coat, holding her leather designer handbag tightly. She walked into the dim entryway of the grand estate house, where Gabriel was waiting for her in the living room.
"Gabriel, my darling boy!" Evelyn cried out, putting on a flawless display of tragic despair as she swept into the room. "The guards told me! Oh God, is it true? Is our sweet Oliver...?"
"He's upstairs," Gabriel said, standing near the unlit fireplace, his voice deadpan, completely hollow. "The doctors are preparing for the end."
Evelyn squeezed her eyes shut, dabbing a non-existent tear with a lace handkerchief. "Oh, the poor, frail child. His heart was just too weak, just like his mother's. It's a tragic family curse, Gabriel. But you have me. We will get through this together."
She reached into her handbag, pulling out a small blue pill wrapped in tissue paper. "I brought his calming medicine, Gabriel. Perhaps if we give him one last dose, it will make his final hours peaceful..."
"Like you did for Victoria?" Gabriel asked quietly.
Evelyn froze. The lace handkerchief stayed hovered near her cheek.
"What did you say?" she asked, her voice dropping its soft tone, suddenly sharp as glass.
"Victoria didn't die of cardiomyopathy," Gabriel said, stepping out of the shadows into the soft lamp light. His gray eyes were burning with absolute hatred. "She died of Digoxin toxicity. The blue pills. The same ones you’ve been feeding my son for three months."
Evelyn stared at him, her mask beginning to slip, revealing the cold, calculating predator beneath. "Gabriel, you are delusional from grief. You don't know what you're talking about."

"Dr. Vance has already confessed, Evelyn," I said, stepping into the room from the side hallway, holding my phone which was actively displaying a police transmission stream. "The police arrested him two hours ago. He surrendered your bank transfers, your recorded communications, and the altered medical records."
Evelyn turned her head toward me, her eyes venomous. "You... you miserable little emergency room peasant. You ruined everything."
