Chapter 4 - Uncovering the Deception

The atmosphere in the private suite became suffocatingly tense. The medical staff cleared out after stabilizing Oliver, leaving Gabriel and me alone in the room with the rhythmic, steady beep of the heart monitor.
Gabriel was pacing like a caged predator. His hands were jammed into his pockets, his knuckles bulging. The realization that his own mother might be hurting his son was tearing him apart from the inside.
"It's impossible," Gabriel rasped, stopping in front of the window, staring out into the dark Chicago skyline. "Evelyn loves Oliver. He's her only grandchild. Why would she do this?"
"I don't know the why yet, Gabriel," I said, walking over to him, standing just close enough to offer a comforting presence. "But scientifically, it makes total sense. There are digitalis-based compounds—like Digoxin or plant extracts like Foxglove—that, when administered in small, controlled doses, mimic the exact symptoms of Long QT Syndrome and arrhythmias. In high doses, they cause fatal cardiac arrest."
Gabriel swallowed hard, his throat moving painfully. "Victoria... her cardiac arrest..."
"We need to test Oliver's blood specifically for Digitalis toxicity," I said. "Standard hospital panels don't screen for it unless explicitly ordered. I've already sent a sealed sample to a private, off-site forensic lab under a pseudonym. We’ll have the results by tomorrow morning."
Gabriel looked down at me, his eyes filled with a mixture of agony, fury, and a profound, raw vulnerability. "If this is true... I let the monster into my home. I trusted her with my son's life."
"You couldn't have known," I said softly, reaching out without thinking and placing a hand on his forearm. His muscles were like steel under my palm, wire-tight with tension. "Manipulative people hide behind the mask of care. You were grieving your wife, running an empire, and trying to be a father. You trusted your family."
Gabriel looked down at my hand on his arm, then covered it with his own large, warm hand. The touch was electrical, a spark of pure, human connection in the middle of a nightmare.
"Thank God Oliver chose you," Gabriel whispered, his voice thick with emotion. "If you hadn't been in that hallway..."
"I was in that hallway," I replied gently. "And I'm not going anywhere."
For a long moment, we just stood there, anchored to each other. I could feel the heat radiating from him, the sheer strength of a man who was used to standing alone, finally allowing someone else to share the weight.
At sunrise, my phone buzzed with an encrypted email from the private lab.
I opened the file. The lab results were definitive.
Digoxin concentration: 4.8 ng/mL. (Toxic level).
My breath caught in my throat. It was absolute proof. Oliver was being slowly poisoned with a powerful cardiac glycoside.
"Is it back?" Gabriel asked, stepping out of Oliver's sleeping area into the lounge.
I showed him the digital report on my screen. "It's confirmed. High concentrations of Digoxin. This isn't a genetic disease. It’s deliberate poisoning."
Gabriel’s entire body went rigid. The grief vanished, replaced by a cold, lethal resolve. "I'm going to tear down everything she owns."
"We need to be smart, Gabriel," I warned, grabbing his arm before he could storm out. "If you confront her now without legal proof of how she's administering it, her lawyers will spin it. We need physical evidence of the pills or the source. And we need to protect Oliver immediately."
"She won't get within a mile of him," Gabriel snarled. "I'll double the private security detail at the hospital."
"No," I countered. "Security guards can be paid off or ordered away by family members. I have a friend who runs a private medical recovery facility—an unlisted, highly secure sanctuary outside the city. We move Oliver there under a false name today."
Gabriel looked at me, his sharp eyes searching mine. "You're taking my son out of the hospital?"
"I'm keeping him alive," I said steadily. "And I'm coming with him."
May you like
Gabriel stared at me for three long seconds. Then, slowly, his hand reached out and gently cupped the side of my face, his thumb brushing over my cheekbone. The touch sent a shiver straight down my spine.
"I have spent my whole life surrounded by people who want something from me," Gabriel said softly, his gray eyes shining with an emotion that made my heart leap. "You are the first person who only wants to save what matters to me. Lead the way, Claire. I trust you."
