Chapter 10 - The Sterling Family

Two years later.
The grand courtyard of the Sterling estate was transformed into a magical winter wonderland. Snow covered the manicured lawns, while thousands of warm fairy lights flickered in the evergreen trees surrounding the glass conservatory where our wedding reception was being held.
Music echoed gently through the hall as guests laughed, danced, and celebrated.
I stood near the entrance of the conservatory, wearing an off-the-shoulder lace wedding gown with a sweeping train that sparkled like fresh snow under the chandelier lights. My hair was styled in soft waves, pinned with pearl accents.
"You look like a queen," a voice said beside me.
I looked down to see Oliver, now eight years old, looking extraordinarily handsome in his mini charcoal tuxedo and black bow tie. He had grown taller, his health fully restored, his eyes bright with boundless energy and joy.
"And you look like the most handsome best man in the world," I smiled, crouching down despite my big dress to fix his bow tie. "Are you having fun?"
"Yeah! But Dad is looking for you," Oliver giggled, pointing toward the dance floor. "He says he's losing his mind because his wife walked away for two minutes."
I laughed, kissing Oliver’s cheek. "Go get some cake, young man."
"Yes, Mom!" Oliver shouted happily before darting off toward the dessert table.
My heart melted instantly at the word. Mom. He had started calling me that six months ago, and every single time he said it, my chest swelled with overwhelming gratitude and love.
Two strong, familiar arms wrapped around my waist from behind, pulling me back against a warm, solid chest. Gabriel leaned down, pressing a soft kiss to the side of my neck.
"Found you," Gabriel whispered in his rich, low voice.
I turned in his arms, wrapping my hands around his lapels, looking up into his breathtaking gray eyes. He looked devastatingly handsome in his custom tuxedo, his eyes shining with pure happiness.
"I wasn't hiding, Mr. Sterling," I teased softly. "I was just admiring our family."
Gabriel looked over at Oliver, who was currently trying to sneak a second piece of cake with my sister laughing beside him. Then Gabriel looked back down at me, his gaze softening into pure tenderness.
"Our family," Gabriel repeated softly, the words sounding like a sacred promise. "You built this, Claire. Out of trauma and fear, you built us a life filled with joy."
"We built it together," I corrected gently, stepping closer to press my body against his.
Gabriel smiled, sliding his hand down to rest gently over my stomach, where a tiny, barely noticeable swell lay beneath the silk of my wedding dress.
Our three-month secret. A little sister for Oliver, due in the summer.
Gabriel looked down at his hand on my stomach, his gray eyes misting with emotional tears. He leaned down and pressed a long, gentle kiss right over my belly, before rising back up to capture my lips in a deep, passionate kiss.
Around us, the snow fell softly against the glass walls of the conservatory, the music played softly, and our family laughed under the warm glow of the lights.

I had walked past Room 314 three years ago expecting just another busy day in the emergency room. Instead, I had found a frightened boy who couldn't be bought, a father who learned how to love again, and a home where I truly belonged.
Our story didn't start like a fairy tale, but standing in Gabriel’s arms, wrapped in endless love and warmth, I knew it was our very own happily ever after.
