Chapter 5 - Sanctuary and Secrets

By afternoon, Oliver had been discreetly transferred to the secure estate in the rolling hills outside Chicago. The facility, hidden behind gated forests, was equipped with state-of-the-art medical equipment, but designed to look like a peaceful country home.

With the blue medicine out of his system and receiving proper digitalis-antidote therapy, Oliver’s recovery was astonishingly fast. His color returned, his appetite bloomed, and for the first time in months, he laughed.

I was sitting on the sunlit back porch of the estate, watching Oliver kick a soccer ball across the grass with one of the off-duty security guards.

"He hasn't run like that in a year," Gabriel said, stepping out onto the porch holding two glasses of lemonade. He wore a simple navy sweater and jeans—looking far less like the intimidating CEO and more like a handsome, devoted father.

He handed me a glass and sat beside me on the wooden bench. "The antidote is working?"

"Yes," I smiled, watching Oliver laugh as he scored a goal. "His heart rhythm has completely stabilized. The toxic levels are flushing out. He's going to be completely fine, Gabriel."

Gabriel let out a long breath, leaning his head back against the house wall. "I feel like I can finally breathe for the first time in three years." He turned his head to look at me. "And it's all because of you."

"I was just doing my job," I said, suddenly feeling shy under his intense gaze.

"No," Gabriel said firmly, turning his body toward me. "A doctor gives medicine and reads charts. You stood up to me, you stood up to my mother, you listened to a frightened boy when everyone else dismissed him, and you risked your career to move him here. That’s not just a job, Claire. That’s who you are."

Our eyes locked. The autumn breeze fluttered through the trees, carrying the sweet smell of pine, but all I could focus on was the warmth of Gabriel sitting beside me. The distance between us seemed to shrink instinctively.

Gabriel leaned in slightly, his eyes dropping to my lips before rising back to meet mine. "Claire... I know the timing is insane. My life is a chaotic war zone right now. But I haven't felt this alive, or this drawn to someone, in a very long time."

My heart pounded against my ribs—not from arrhythmia, but from pure, unadulterated attraction. "Gabriel... I'm his doctor."

"You were his doctor," Gabriel corrected softly, reaching out to tuck a stray strand of hair behind my ear. His fingers brushed against my skin, sending a delicious warmth through my blood. "Now you are the woman who saved my family. And I don't intend to let you walk away once this is over."

Before I could process the fluttering in my stomach, my phone rang, shattering the moment.

It was my contact at the hospital, Detective Miller—a trusted investigator I had called to discreetly look into Dr. Vance, the family doctor.

"Claire," Detective Miller's voice came through the speaker. "You were right about Dr. Vance. We obtained a warrant for his private financial records. Off-shore accounts registered in the Cayman Islands have received monthly transfers for the past two years."

"From whom?" I asked, my voice tightening.

"From a shell corporation owned by Evelyn Sterling," Miller replied. "And Claire... there's something else. We pulled the medical records of Victoria Sterling from three years ago. Vance was the certifying physician on her death certificate. No autopsy was performed at the mother-in-law's request."

I gasped, looking over at Gabriel. He had heard. His face had turned deathly pale.

"She killed Victoria," Gabriel whispered, the truth hitting him like a physical blow. "My God... she killed my wife."

"Why?" I asked into the phone. "What was the motive?"

"We just unsealed Victoria's original trust and the Sterling family inheritance structure," Miller explained. "Victoria's personal fortune of two hundred million dollars was set to pass entirely to Oliver upon her death, managed by a sole trustee until he turns twenty-one. If Oliver were to pass away without heirs..."

"The entire fortune reverts to the grandmother," Gabriel finished the sentence, his voice dropping into a register of sheer, freezing fury. "Evelyn."
