By the following week, Mikey was finally discharged from the hospital. The doctors gave him a clean bill of health, though they recommended a few months of gentle child psychology sessions to help him process the emotional fallout of the trauma.
Walking him through our front door felt like stepping into a brand-new life. The house smelled faintly of cinnamon and old books, warm and familiar. Our golden retriever, Buster, greeted us with frantic tail wags, practically knocking Mikey over in his excitement.
"Welcome home, buddy," I whispered, helping him unpack his small duffel bag in his bedroom.
That evening, neighbors and members of the parents' coalition dropped off casseroles, homemade cookies, and handwritten cards of support for Mikey. The mailbox was overflowing with letters from parents across three neighboring school districts expressing their gratitude for our courage in standing up against the corrupt administration.
