Chapter 4 - The Coalition of Parents

With the encrypted data safely tucked into my wallet on two separate USB drives, I returned to the hospital to find Mikey sitting up and chatting with a nurse about superhero movies. Seeing him smile, even a small, tentative one, gave me the strength I needed for the next phase of the battle.

That evening, the parents' coalition met in secret at Mrs. Gable’s suburban living room. Eight couples sat on couches, armchairs, and the carpet, their faces illuminated by the soft glow of lamps and whispered anxieties.

I placed the flash drive on the coffee table like a live grenade.

"What is that?" asked Marcus Vance—no relation to the principal—whose son had been in Miss Waters' class the previous year.

"That is the digital archive of the school district's internal communications for the past three years," I said, standing before them. "It contains proof that not only did they know about Miss Waters' behavior, but they actively blackmailed and silenced parents who tried to speak out before she targeted Mikey."

The room erupted into furious chatter. Mothers wept openly; fathers slammed fists onto table surfaces. The illusion of safety that every parent relies on when sending their children to school had been shattered completely, replaced by the bitter realization that the system was rigged to protect institutions over children.

"We can't just hand this to the local police department," Mrs. Gable pointed out reasonably, adjusting her glasses. "Superintendent Harris has deep political ties with the county sheriff. If we drop it into local channels without oversight, it could get buried."

"She's right," a voice spoke from the doorway.

We all turned to see Officer Dave walking into the living room, uninvited but deeply welcomed. He held up his badge with a slight smile. "Good thing I'm an investigator with the state bureau, not just the local precinct. And good thing I happen to know a federal prosecutor who specializes in institutional corruption and civil rights violations."

Dave walked over to the coffee table and picked up the flash drive, pocketing it securely. "Mr. Miller, your initiative tonight just blew this entire conspiracy wide open. Miss Waters posted bail an hour ago, but federal marshals are already waiting outside her apartment with a fresh set of federal indictments."

A collective sigh of relief swept through the room. But I knew the battle was far from over. A cornered animal fights the hardest, and Miss Waters still had powerful allies in the district administration who would stop at nothing to save their own skins.
