Chapter 10 - The Promise Kept

That evening, after Mikey had fallen fast asleep in his bed after an exhausting day of soccer celebrations, I stepped out onto the front porch with a cup of warm coffee.

The autumn air was crisp and clean, carrying the scent of fallen leaves and wood smoke from neighboring chimneys. The streetlights glowed softly along the quiet suburban road, casting long, peaceful shadows across our manicured lawn.

I looked down at my phone and saw a text message from Officer Dave: “Checking in. Hope you and Mikey are having a wonderful evening. Let’s grab that barbecue dinner next week.”

I smiled and typed back: “Everything is perfect, Dave. We’re finally home.”

I slipped the phone back into my pocket, leaned against the wooden porch railing, and looked up at the vast, star-filled night sky. The nightmare was finally behind us. The darkness had been defeated by truth, courage, and an unbreakable bond between a father and his son.

Mikey was safe. Our home was whole again. And as I took a slow, deep breath of the cool night air, I knew that no matter what storms lay ahead in the future, we would face them together—and we would always win.
