Chapter 9 - A New Dawn

Winter arrived with a blanket of pure, untouched snow, turning the countryside into a quiet, glittering wonderland. Inside the cottage, the stone fireplace crackled with warmth, casting a golden glow across the wooden floors and the brightly decorated Christmas tree standing proudly in the corner.

It was Christmas Eve.

Leo and Lily were fast asleep in their nursery upstairs, their tiny stockings hanging neatly by the mantelpiece, stuffed with handmade toys and childish trinkets.

Michael and Emily sat on the plush rug before the fireplace, sharing a quiet glass of wine as the snow fell softly against the windowpanes.

"Do you remember where we were last year at this exact time?" Michael asked softly, staring into the flickering flames.

Emily chuckled, leaning back against his chest as his arms wrapped securely around her waist. "I was sitting in a freezing motel room, eating stale crackers, wondering how I was going to afford diapers for the next week."

Michael’s embrace tightened, a wave of painful remorse washing over him, instantly softened by the comforting warmth of her body against his. "I am so sorry, Emily. Every single day, I wish I could take back every harsh word, every closed door, every second of pain I caused you."

Emily turned in his arms, her hands reaching up to cup his face. Her eyes shone with absolute forgiveness and fierce, unwavering love.

"You can't change the past, Michael," she whispered, her thumb gently brushing his cheek. "None of us can. But you woke up. You fought for us. And you stayed. That’s what matters."

"I will never leave you again," Michael promised, his voice thick with emotion. "Never."

Emily smiled, leaning forward to press her lips softly against his. The kiss was slow, deep, and filled with the quiet grace of a love that had walked through the fire and emerged unbreakable.

As they pulled apart, Michael reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, velvet box.

Emily’s breath caught. She stared at the box, her eyes widening in surprise.

"Michael... you don't have to—"

"I never asked you properly," Michael interrupted, his voice steady and clear. "The first time, I let pride and arrogance dictate our lives. I want to do this right. I want to spend the rest of my days proving that I am worthy of the family we’ve built."

He clicked the box open. Inside sat a simple, elegant platinum band, glittering softly in the firelight.

"Emily, my love, my life... will you marry me again?"

May you like

Tears spilled over Emily’s lashes, but her smile radiated like the sun. She threw her arms around his neck, burying her face in his shoulder.

"Yes," she whispered, her voice choked with happy tears. "Yes, Michael. A million times, yes."
