Chapter 3 - The Broken Trust

Michael’s breath hitched in his throat. He took a hesitant step toward the porch stairs, his boots sinking slightly into the damp soil.
"Emily..." he choked out, the name tasting like ash on his tongue. "Please. Let me explain."
"Explain what, Michael?" Emily’s voice was barely above a whisper, yet it cut through the night air with devastating clarity. "Explain how easily you believed that I would throw away everything we built? Explain how quickly you handed me over to a stranger’s mercy without even asking for my side of the story?"
She shifted slightly, and the moonlight caught the small, perfect face of the baby nestled in her right arm. The child stirred, letting out a soft, sleepy sigh.
Michael felt his knees weaken. "The babies... are they..."
"They have your eyes, Michael," Emily interrupted softly. "Even when you slammed the door in my face, even when your security guards threw my clothes onto the driveway like garbage, even when I sat in that cold hospital room alone, terrified that I wouldn't survive the birth... I looked into their little faces every single day and saw you."
She paused, her gaze steadying on his face. "And every single day, I thanked God that you didn't know, because if you couldn't trust me when we had a home, you certainly wouldn't have protected us when I had nothing left."
"I was blind," Michael said, his voice breaking as a tear finally slipped down his cheek. "Ashley engineered the whole thing. David found the financial records, the unauthorized access cards, the transfers—"
"I know," Emily said quietly.
Michael blinked, stunned. "You... you knew?"
"I knew from the beginning," Emily replied, stepping back into the doorway, her arms tightening protectively around the twins. "I tried to tell you about the access logs the night you threw me out. I tried to show you the forged signatures. But you didn't want the truth, Michael. You wanted a clean break so you could marry your precious little socialite without feeling guilty. Pride made you a monster."
The words hit Michael like physical blows. He stumbled back against his SUV, sliding down until his hands rested flat against the dusty door. He buried his face in his hands, dry, wracking sobs tearing from his chest.
The old woman watched him for a long moment, then sighed softly, stepping back inside to give them privacy.
Emily didn't move. She stood in the doorway, watching the man who had once been her entire world completely shatter in the dirt.

"Go home, Michael," she said softly. "Go back to your mansion, your meetings, and your fiancée. Leave us in peace."
"No," Michael whispered, looking up, his eyes burning with a sudden, unyielding fire. "I’m not leaving. Not without you. And not without my children."
