Chapter 4 - The Gathering Storm

The digital clock on the dashboard glowed 4:15 a.m. Michael hadn't moved from his spot against the side of his SUV. He sat on the gravel, his knees pulled up, watching the yellow sliver of light in the cottage slowly fade as dawn crept over the horizon.
Inside, Emily and the babies were asleep. Outside, Michael was waging a silent war against his own past.
His phone buzzed violently in his jacket pocket. He pulled it out, expecting David, but the screen flashed Ashley’s name.
He swiped to answer, pressing the phone to his ear.
"Michael Sterling! Where on earth are you?" Ashley’s voice shrieked through the speaker, high-pitched and frantic. "I’ve been calling your office since midnight! The tasting is at nine this morning, and the caterers are already here! Don’t tell me you forgot!"
Michael stood up slowly, brushing the dust from his expensive trousers. His voice, when he spoke, was dangerously calm.
"I didn't forget, Ashley."
"Then get back here right now! What are you even doing? You sound... strange. Where are you?"
"I’m visiting some old friends," Michael said smoothly, his eyes fixed on the rotting wooden boards of the cottage porch. "In fact, I’m looking at some very interesting financial documents right now. Specifically, the ones regarding unauthorized access cards and forged wire transfers from twelve months ago."
There was a sudden, dead silence on the line.
The crisp hum of the city background noise on Ashley’s end vanished, replaced by the sound of ragged, uneven breathing.
"What... what are you talking about, Michael?" Ashley’s voice dropped an octave, the sweetness entirely gone, replaced by a sharp, panicked edge.
"You know exactly what I’m talking about, Ashley," Michael said, his tone turning glacial. "Every single transaction. The hospital intake records. The fake hotel photos. Marcus using corporate subsidiaries to cover your tracks. It’s all right here on my screen."
"You're... you're insane," she stammered, her voice cracking. "You’ve been working too hard! Come home right now, let’s talk about this—"
"There’s nothing to talk about," Michael interrupted, cutting her off completely. "When you get to the mansion this morning, you’ll find my legal team waiting at the gates. Your access cards have been deactivated. Your credit lines are frozen. And by noon, the police will have the complete dossier on corporate fraud, identity theft, and extortion."
"Michael, wait! You can't do this! We’re getting married! We have a life together!" she screamed, the mask of polished perfection finally shattering completely.
"We had nothing," Michael said coldly. "And by the end of today, you won't even have your freedom."

He hung up the phone without waiting for her reply and tossed it onto the passenger seat.
The sun broke over the horizon, casting a golden light across the rural landscape. Michael took a deep breath, turned toward the cottage door, and prepared for the hardest fight of his life.
