Chapter 8 - The Shadow Retreats

Though the estate was peaceful, the underworld of Chicago did not remain entirely silent. Word of Elena’s downfall and the restructuring of the Bellaro syndicate sent shockwaves through rival factions. Some saw the internal purge as a sign of weakness; others saw it as an opportunity to test the new leadership.
Two weeks after the nursery expansion was completed, Mateo requested a private audience with Lorenzo in the primary study.
Maya was downstairs in the newly built medical lab, running routine calibration checks on the monitor systems, when Mateo’s heavy boots echoed down the corridor. He stopped at the glass door, knocking twice before stepping inside.
"Boss wants you upstairs in the study, Nurse Ellis," Mateo said, his expression unusually grim.
Maya turned off the diagnostic machine. "Is it Nico?"
"No, Nico is sleeping like a rock," Mateo shook his head. "It’s about the remnants of Crane’s network. A syndicate courier was intercepted trying to move offshore records through the port. He was carrying a message addressed directly to the Bellaro household."
Maya unfastened her white lab coat, tossing it over the back of her chair. "Lead the way."
When Maya entered the grand study, the atmosphere was thick with tension. Lorenzo stood by the tall arched windows overlooking the courtyard, his broad shoulders tense beneath his dark shirt. On the mahogany desk lay a charred, sealed envelope bearing a wax stamp that made Lorenzo’s jaw tighten.
"What is it?" Maya asked, walking across the Persian rug.
"A parting gift from an associate of my sister’s," Lorenzo said, turning around. His voice was cold, but there was no fear in his eyes—only a razor-sharp readiness. "They thought cutting off the head of the snake would leave the family vulnerable. They sent a warning, attempting to test whether my focus was split between business and protecting my son."
Maya picked up the decrypted transcription sheet lying beside the envelope. It read: An empire built on blood cannot be saved by a nurse.
She read it once, folded the paper neatly, and set it back down on the desk.
"They don't understand, do they?" Maya said calmly.
"Understand what?" Lorenzo asked, looking down at her.
"They think you’re vulnerable because you love your son," Maya said, her voice steady and clear. "They think a father's heart is a weakness. But they don't realize that loving someone enough to protect them with everything you have is the strongest armor a man can ever wear."
Lorenzo stared at her, the hard lines of his face softening into something deeply human. The tension in the room evaporated, replaced by a quiet, unshakable certainty.

"You're right," Lorenzo said, walking toward her until only a few inches separated them. "They think I'm distracted. They'll find out just how dangerous a focused father can be."
"Handle your business, Mr. Bellaro," Maya said, holding his gaze without flinching. "I'll keep the nursery safe."
