Chapter 6 - Dawn over Chicago

The first gray light of dawn began to bleed through the heavy velvet curtains of the nursery, painting the polished wooden floor in pale ribbons of gold and silver.
The crisis had passed, but the estate was humming with a quiet, efficient reorganization. Mateo and his loyal men had already secured the perimeter, purging the household staff of any individuals connected to Elena’s clandestine network. Dr. Crane had been quietly detained at his private clinic before he could board a morning flight to Zurich, his bank accounts frozen and his medical license stripped before the sun had fully cleared the Chicago skyline.
Inside the nursery, the air smelled faintly of lavender and sterile antiseptic.
Maya was repacking her clinical bag on the low table near the window. Her shift was technically over, her replacement from Harbor Shield Medical Placement due to arrive by mid-morning, though given the events of the night, things would clearly look different moving forward.
The door clicked open, and Lorenzo stepped in. He had changed out of his blood-stained dress shirt into a clean charcoal sweater and dark trousers. Despite having gone through the most grueling night of his life, he looked sharper, unburdened by the parasitic weight of his sister’s treachery.
In his arms, wrapped in a soft blue cashmere blanket, was Nico.
The baby was awake, his wide, dark eyes blinking sleepily against the morning light, clutching the hem of his blanket with tiny fists.
Maya paused, looking up from her bag. "You shouldn't carry him like that. His spine needs support—"
"Mateo taught me," Lorenzo interrupted, a faint, rare hint of amusement touching his lips as he adjusted his grip, supporting the baby’s neck with expert precision. "He has three kids of his own. He told me if I didn't learn how to hold my own son properly, he’d resign."
Maya smiled, closing the latch of her medical bag. "Mateo is a smart man."
Lorenzo walked over, stopping just a foot away from her. He looked down at Nico, who let out a soft, bubbling coo and stretched tiny fingers toward Maya, exactly as he had done the night before.
"He wants you to hold his hand again," Lorenzo noted quietly.
"He wants a familiar anchor," Maya corrected gently. She reached out, letting her index finger rest in Nico’s palm. The baby immediately curled his small fingers around it, his breathing slow and secure.
Lorenzo watched them for a moment, then looked up, meeting Maya’s eyes directly.
"Harbor Shield Placement called me an hour ago," Lorenzo said. "They asked if you would be available for a long-term contract."
Maya raised an eyebrow. "Is that so? Most agencies don't appreciate nurses who interrogate doctors and uncover family conspiracies in their first four hours."
"Most agencies don't work for me," Lorenzo replied smoothly. "And most nurses aren't willing to stand up to a room full of armed guards and a corrupt physician just to save a child who can't speak for himself. I need someone in this house who cannot be bought, cannot be intimidated, and knows how to listen when my son tells the truth."
Maya looked at the baby, then back up at the formidable man standing before her. She thought of her old hospital, the administrators who wanted her silent, the corporate healthcare system that valued protocol over human life. Then she thought of the quiet strength in Lorenzo’s eyes—a strength forged in fire, now entirely dedicated to protecting his son.
"I have conditions, Mr. Bellaro," Maya said firmly.
"Name them."
"No secret protocols. No filtered air filters or mysterious supplements unless I inspect them personally. And if I tell you a treatment is wrong, you listen to me—even if the doctor has three degrees and a famous name."
Lorenzo let out a low, genuine chuckle, a sound that completely transformed his stern face. "Agreed. What about your salary?"
May you like
"Triple my current agency rate. And I want full autonomy over the nursery wing."
"Done," Lorenzo said without hesitation. "Welcome to the Bellaro household, Nurse Ellis."
