Chapter 4 - The Hand That Rocks the Cradle

Elena stopped directly outside the door to the nursery. Through the open service panel, Maya and Mateo watched her every move from the shadows.
Elena pulled a small, gold-plated electronic device from the pocket of her silk robe—a signal jammer designed to temporarily disable the local digital monitor feed inside the primary security hub downstairs. She pressed a button, and a tiny blue LED blinked once, signaling that the room’s audio-video broadcast to Lorenzo's command center had just been muted.
So that’s how it was done, Maya thought. The system wasn't hacked from the outside; it was blinded from within by someone with biometric clearance.
Elena pushed the nursery door open just enough to slip inside.
Maya signaled Mateo to stay put and crept silently down the corridor, positioning herself just beside the doorframe.
Inside the nursery, Lorenzo was still sitting in the leather armchair. He hadn't fallen asleep; he was sitting upright, staring straight ahead, his posture rigid. When the door creaked, he didn't turn around immediately, assuming it was Maya returning.
"I thought I told you to stay with the supplies," Lorenzo’s voice cut through the dim room, cold and flat.
Elena froze. Her hand, which had been reaching into her robe pocket for something small and metallic, stopped mid-air.
A slow, practiced smile spread across Elena's face as she stepped fully into the dim light of the crib lamp. "Lory. You're still awake? You'll exhaust yourself over this child."
Lorenzo slowly turned his head. His eyes didn't look tired anymore; they looked like polished obsidian.
"You disabled the monitor feed, Elena," Lorenzo said, his voice terrifyingly calm.
Elena’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second, but she recovered quickly, letting out a soft, sisterly laugh. "The feed hums, darling. It gives me a headache down the hall. I just came to check on my nephew. I heard he had another episode."
"How did you know he had an episode?" Lorenzo asked. "The guards haven't left their post, and the nurse and I haven't stepped out."
Elena’s eyes darted toward the crib, where Nico was sleeping peacefully. "I... I heard him crying from the hallway."
"He hasn't made a sound in over an hour."
The silence in the nursery became heavy, crushing, and absolute.
Elena lowered her hand, her expression hardening, shedding the warm mask of the doting aunt like a snake shedding skin. "You always were too observant, Lory. Even when we were children, nothing slipped past you."
"Why?" Lorenzo stood up from the chair. At six-foot-two, he towered over her, his presence dominating the entire room. Yet Elena didn't flinch.
"Because you are weak," Elena spat out, her voice dripping with a venom that had been festering for years. "You built this entire empire on blood and iron, and the moment a fragile little baby arrived, you went soft. You started cutting deals with the Chicago syndicate to secure a 'clean' future for an heir who wouldn't even survive his fifth year. You were giving away our leverage, Lorenzo!"
"So you decided to kill your own nephew?" Lorenzo's voice shook with a rage so deep it was barely contained.
"I didn't want to kill him," Elena said coldly. "I just wanted him sick enough—weak enough—to prove that you cannot afford sentimentality in our world. Dr. Crane was easy to buy; his clinic is drowning in debts from his offshore accounts. I provided the modified caps. I controlled the feeding schedule through the kitchen staff. It was poetry, Lorenzo. A slow lesson in reality."
She reached into her robe pocket again, her fingers curling around a small ceramic vial. "And if you hadn't brought in that blasted nurse tonight—"
May you like
"If I hadn't brought her in," a voice interrupted from the doorway, "you would have finished the job by dawn."
Elena whipped her head around. Maya stood in the entrance, flanked by Mateo, holding the black leather ledger up for them to see.
