Chapter 5 - The Ledger of Betrayal

Elena’s eyes widened as she stared at the black notebook in Maya’s hand. For the first time, genuine panic flickered across her features.

"Where did you find that?" Elena hissed.

"In the service vault behind the east wing wainscoting," Maya replied, stepping calmly into the room while Mateo moved to block the exit. "Dr. Crane is methodical, but he’s a creature of habit. Every financial transfer, every offshore shell corporation matching the initials V.R.—which, by the way, stands for Victoria Rossi, your maiden name, Elena—is documented right here. You didn't just buy Crane; you used your own family accounts to fund the operation, thinking no auditor would ever look past the household expense ledger."

Elena’s face twisted into an ugly snarl. "You think a diary and a clever nurse are going to destroy me, Lorenzo? Look at him! Look at how he trusted me!"

She suddenly lunged forward toward the crib, her hand pulling the ceramic vial from her pocket. "If I can't have this family united under my vision, then nobody gets an heir!"

Before Elena could uncapping the vial, a massive shadow crossed the room. Mateo moved with terrifying speed, seizing Elena’s wrist and twisting it upward with brutal efficiency. The ceramic vial slipped from her fingers, shattering harmlessly against the thick wool rug.

Elena screamed in pain and fury as Mateo pinned her arms behind her back, forcing her to her knees.

Lorenzo walked slowly toward her. He didn't shout. He didn't strike her. He simply looked down at his sister with a look of profound, chilling detachment.

"You are blood," Lorenzo said quietly. "In our world, that used to mean something."

"You care more about a puling infant than the family that built you!" Elena shrieked, struggling against Mateo's iron grip. "They will tear you apart, Lorenzo! Without me managing the board, your enemies will eat you alive!"

"Take her to the lower vault," Lorenzo ordered Mateo without looking back. "Lock her in isolation. No phone calls, no visitors, no contact with the outside world. Let her see what it feels like to be completely cut off from everything she plotted to steal."

"Yes, boss," Mateo muttered, hauling Elena to her feet and dragging her struggling form out of the nursery. The heavy oak door clicked shut behind them, leaving a profound, echoing silence in its wake.

Lorenzo stood motionless for a long moment, staring at the floor where the shattered vial lay. The tension in his shoulders slowly receded, replaced by the crushing weight of a betrayal that cut closer to home than any knife ever could.

He turned his head slowly toward Maya.

"You saved his life," Lorenzo said, his voice rough.

"I did my job," Maya answered softly, walking over to check Nico’s vitals once more. The monitor showed a steady, peaceful rhythm. The baby was sleeping soundly, completely unaware of the storm that had just passed over him.

"You did a great deal more than that," Lorenzo said, taking a step closer to her. "In this house, trust is a currency that doesn't exist. Everyone is looking for an angle, an edge, a way to survive. Yet you walked in here four hours ago and risked everything to protect a child who isn't yours."

"Children don't belong to factions, Mr. Bellaro," Maya said, looking up at him with clear, unwavering eyes. "They just need someone to listen when they try to speak."
