Chapter 9 - Justice and Healing

The weeks that followed were a long, arduous journey, but for the first time in a very long time, there was light at the end of the tunnel.
Maya’s surgery was a complete success. The surgeons managed to safely realign her vertebrae, relieving the pressure on her nerves. With physical therapy, they promised she would walk, run, and play just like any other child.
Daniel never left her bedside. He slept on a uncomfortable hospital chair, holding Maya's small hand, weeping and begging for her forgiveness.
"I'm so sorry, my sweet girl," Daniel whispered, his tears wetting her sheets. "I was so focused on providing a life for you that I forgot to actually protect you. I will never, ever let anyone hurt you again."
Maya smiled, her face finally free of the constant, lingering shadow of pain. "I forgive you, Papa. But... can we keep Marta?"
Daniel looked up to see Marta standing in the doorway, carrying a fresh bowl of homemade chicken soup.
Daniel stood up and walked over to Marta. He didn't see a maid; he saw the savior of his family. He took both of her hands in his.

"Marta, there are no words, no amount of money, that can ever repay what you did for my daughter. You didn't just save her life; you saved her soul. I want you to stay with us. Not as a maid, but as Maya’s guardian and the manager of our entire household. You are family now."
Marta smiled, her eyes tearing up. "I would be honored, Mr. Alvarez. But first, this soup needs to be eaten while it's hot."
