Chapter 8 - The Storm Breaks

The surgery took four grueling hours. Marta sat in the waiting room, her hands clasped in prayer. Jose stayed by her side, offering what comfort he could.
Around 2:00 AM, the glass doors of the waiting room slid open. Daniel Alvarez walked in, flanked by two police officers. His face was a mask of confusion, shock, and mounting fury. Behind him, Vanessa walked with her head held high, looking offended rather than worried.
"Marta!" Daniel stormed over. "What is the meaning of this? The police showed up at my home! They said Maya is here in critical condition? What did you do to her?"
Before Marta could speak, Vanessa chimed in. "I knew it! I told you, Daniel, this woman was unstable. She must have dropped Maya, or worse! She probably took her here to cover up her own negligence!"
"Quiet!"
The voice didn't come from Marta. It came from Dr. Silva, who had just walked out of the surgical wing, still wearing his green scrubs.
"Are you Daniel Alvarez?" the doctor asked, his eyes drilling into the millionaire.
"Yes, I am. I demand to know what is happening with my daughter!"
Dr. Silva pulled out a tablet, displaying the digital X-rays and medical photos taken before the surgery. "This is what is happening to your daughter, Mr. Alvarez."
He pointed to the screen. "Your daughter suffered a severe, high-impact blunt force trauma to her lower back approximately eight months ago. The impact fractured her spine. Because it was left completely untreated, the bone fused incorrectly, pinching her spinal cord. Furthermore, a deep-seated abscess formed, which eventually became highly infected. We just removed a massive pocket of infection that was hours away from killing her."
Daniel stared at the images, his face turning completely pale. "Eight months... but... how? Why didn't she tell me?"
"She didn't tell you because she was terrified," Dr. Silva said coldly. He turned his gaze to Vanessa, whose perfect composure was finally beginning to crack. "And according to the patient's statement before she was anesthetized, as well as the testimony of your housekeeper, your wife is the one who shoved her into a marble table—and then threatened her with abandonment if she spoke a word."
Daniel slowly turned to face Vanessa. The realization of his own blindness, his neglect, and the monstrous cruelty of the woman he had married hit him like a physical blow.
"Daniel, she's lying!" Vanessa stammered, backing away. "The maid is trying to extort us! You know how imaginative Maya is—"
"Enough!" Daniel roared, a sound of pure agony and rage that echoed through the sterile hospital corridor. "Get away from me. Get away from my daughter."

The police officers stepped forward. "Vanessa Alvarez, you are under arrest for felony child abuse, medical neglect, and corporate fraud investigation regarding your household claims. Please step forward."
As the handcuffs clicked into place, Vanessa screamed, her mask entirely shattered, revealing the ugly, bitter soul underneath. She was dragged out of the hospital, leaving behind a silence that was finally, truly, broken.
