Chapter 6 - The Faltering Mask

By the following week, Maya’s fever had spiked. The infection from the deep tissue injury was beginning to enter her bloodstream. She was pale, shivering in the middle of a warm afternoon, and could barely stand.

Vanessa, however, was busy planning a massive charity gala she was hosting at the mansion. The house was a chaotic flurry of florists, caterers, and decorators.

"Keep that child in her room," Vanessa hissed to Marta in the kitchen. "I don't want her moping around and ruining the atmosphere. If she looks sick, people will ask questions, and I won't have my reputation ruined by her dramatics."

"She has a fever of 103, Mrs. Alvarez!" Marta argued, her voice rising in desperation, abandoning her usual deference. "She needs an emergency room! Now!"

Vanessa stepped close, her eyes narrow and vicious. "Listen to me, you oversized peasant. You do not dictate what happens in this house. You will keep your mouth shut, or I will call the police and tell them you stole my diamond necklace. Who do you think they will believe? A respected socialite, or a hired maid?"

Marta froze. The threat was real, and it was dangerous. If she was arrested, there would be no one left to protect Maya.

"Go to your room, Marta. And don't let me see your face until the guests arrive," Vanessa sneered, turning on her heel.

Marta walked slowly back to her quarters. She sat on her bed, her heart hammering against her ribs. She looked at the small statue of the Virgin Mary on her nightstand.

"Give me strength," she whispered. "And give me a way."
