Chapter 2 - The New Shadow in the Mansion

The silence in the grand mansion of Daniel Alvarez was not the peaceful kind; it was a heavy, suffocating quiet. After the day Maya fell, her world shrunk to the margins of the house. Vanessa’s warning had been clear, whispered into the young girl's ear as she lay gasping on the floor: "If you tell your father, I will make sure he leaves us both, and it will be your fault."

To an eight-year-old, the threat of losing her only remaining parent was more terrifying than the white-hot agony radiating from her lower back. So, Maya stayed silent. She learned to walk with a slight, careful shuffle. She learned to drape her oversized school cardigans over her shoulders to hide how she favored her left side.

Then came Marta.

Marta was a woman of substantial presence—not just because she was a beautifully, unapologetically plus-sized woman, but because she carried an aura of warmth that the cold marble mansion desperately lacked. Hired as the new live-in housekeeper and cook, Marta took one look at the pristine, sterile kitchen and knew this wasn't a home; it was a museum.

From her very first day, Marta’s keen eyes noticed the small, quiet girl who hovered near the edges of the rooms like a ghost. While Vanessa spent her afternoons at high-society luncheons or spa appointments, Maya would slip through the front door after school, her face pale, immediately heading straight for her bedroom without a word.

"Would you like some warm cheese bread, minha querida?" Marta asked one afternoon, her voice a soft, rolling melody.

Maya paused on the bottom step of the grand spiral staircase. She looked at Marta, her eyes wide with a mixture of longing and fear. She glanced instinctively toward the upper hallway, checking if Vanessa was near.

"No, thank you, ma'am," Maya whispered, her voice barely audible.

"Ma'am? Oh, none of that. I am Marta," the cook smiled, her cheeks dimpling. "And my cheese bread has a secret ingredient. It is guaranteed to make even the saddest face smile."

Maya wanted to step down. She wanted the warm bread. But as she shifted her weight, a sharp, stabbing sensation shot up her spine, forcing a gasp from her lips. She quickly turned it into a cough, gripping the wooden banister until her knuckles turned white.

"I have to study," Maya lied quickly, scrambling up the stairs as fast as her aching body would allow.

Marta stood in the hallway, her smile slowly fading into a look of deep concern. She had worked for wealthy families before, and she knew that behind closed doors, many secrets lay hidden. But the look of sheer, physical agony she had just witnessed on that little girl's face was something she could not ignore.
