Chapter 5 - The Wall of Corporate Silence

The following evening, Ethan convened an emergency meeting at Mercer Corporate Headquarters in downtown Hartford.
Sitting around the glass boardroom table were the company’s highest executives: Executive Vice President Julian Vance (Richard's father), Chief Legal Counsel Marcus Sterling, and Regional Director of Freight Arthur Pendelton.
Ethan threw a black leather notebook onto the center of the glass table. It hit with a heavy thud.
"This is Caleb Brooks’ personal log," Ethan said coldly. "It contains dated photos, signature logs, and emails showing that Regional Management ordered the falsification of safety reports at Bridgeport to preserve a $12 million efficiency bonus."
Silence blanketed the room.
Julian Vance cleared his throat, adjusting his gold cufflinks. "Ethan... my boy. You must understand the broader context. Mercer Atlantic processes millions of tons of freight. Equipment fails. Tragedies occur. Reopening an investigation now would destroy our pending merger with Sterling Logistics. It could drop our stock value by 20 percent."
"A man died, Julian," Ethan said, leaning forward, his eyes burning with a dark, dangerous fire. "A four-year-old girl is growing up without a father because our executive bonus structure rewarded cutting corners on human lives."
"The company offered Mrs. Brooks a fair settlement," Marcus Sterling added smoothly. "She signed the release. The legal matter is closed."
"She signed under duress while mourning her husband!" Ethan shouted, slamming his palm on the table.
Julian Vance leaned back, his tone hardening. "Ethan, your father built this company on cold efficiency. He understood that you cannot run an empire by weeping over every fallen brick. If you pull this thread, you won't just ruin Pendelton—you will face shareholder lawsuits for breach of fiduciary duty."

Ethan looked around the room at the men who had served his father. He realized then that he wasn't looking at leaders; he was looking at custodians of a heartless machine.
"Then let them sue me," Ethan whispered.
