Chapter 3 - The Freight Warehouse of Bridgeport
At 6:30 the following morning, Ethan drove his unmarked sedan to Bridgeport, Connecticut.
He didn't take his driver. He didn't wear his tailored Italian suits. Clad in a plain dark jacket and jeans, he pulled into the vast industrial parking lot of Mercer Atlantic Freight Center #4.
The building was a gray monolith under a leaden sky. Giant diesel trucks rumbled through loading bays, spewing exhaust into the cold morning air.
Ethan walked inside unnoticed. The air smelled of diesel fuel, grease, and damp cardboard. Workers in hi-vis vests moved frantically under giant banners that read: SAFETY FIRST, PRODUCTIVITY ALWAYS.
Ethan approached an older worker leaning against a hydraulic jack during a break.
"Excuse me," Ethan said quietly. "Did you happen to know Caleb Brooks?"
The older man froze, scanning Ethan's face suspiciously. "Who's asking? Insurance inspector?"
"Just someone looking for the truth."
The worker spat on the concrete floor and gestured to a dark corner near Loading Dock 7.
"Caleb was the best guy in this pit," the man growled low. "He was the safety steward. He reported that hydraulic dock three times in six months. The seals were leaking, the emergency brakes were corroded. He refused to operate it."
"What happened?" Ethan asked, his blood turning cold.
"Management gave him an ultimatum: clear the backlog or get fired. Caleb had a baby girl at home and a mortgage. He took the shift. The lift gave out while he was underneath a four-ton pallet."
"Why did the police report say operator error?"

The worker let out a bitter laugh. "Because regional management scrubbed the maintenance logs before the state inspectors arrived. They blamed Caleb so the insurance wouldn't hit the company's bottom line. His widow got nothing but a quiet check and a muzzle."
Ethan stood paralyzed. His empire—the empire built by his father and expanded by him—had sacrificed an honest father to save a few thousand dollars on quarterly maintenance.
