Chapter 10 - A Garden Built for Tomorrow

One warm Saturday afternoon in spring, sunlight poured through the blooming canopy of the old oak tree in the private garden of Mercer House.
A brand-new wooden treehouse hung from the sturdy branches above, painted in bright yellow and white.
Sophie, now five years old, was swinging on a wooden tire swing, her laughter ringing out across the manicured lawns.
Ethan sat on a wide wooden bench built around the base of the oak. He wore a simple linen shirt and relaxed trousers. Beside him sat Hannah, her head resting gently on his shoulder, her hand resting warmly in his.
"You look peaceful," Hannah said softly, turning her gaze toward him.
"I am," Ethan replied, leaning down to press a soft kiss against her forehead. "For the first time in my life, I'm not running from anything."
Sophie ran over, her shoes covered in soft green grass, and threw herself onto the bench between them.
"Tree man! Look what I drew!"
She held up a colorful drawing. It showed a giant oak tree, a little girl, a bright sun, a woman with yellow hair, and a tall man holding their hands. Above the figures, she had scribbled in messy child's handwriting: MY FAMILY.
Ethan felt a warmth bloom inside his chest that dissolved every ghost of his past.
He wrapped his arms around both Hannah and Sophie, pulling them tight against his heart.
"Do you like it?" Sophie asked anxiously, peering into his face.
"I love it, sweetheart," Ethan whispered, his eyes shining with tears of true happiness. "It’s the best thing I’ve ever seen."
Sophie leaned her cheek against his chest, listening to the steady, strong rhythm of his heartbeat—the very same heart she had checked under the tree two years ago.
"You're not pretending anymore, right?" she asked softly.
Ethan looked at Hannah, whose bright smile reflected all the light in the world, and then down at the precious little girl in his arms.
May you like
"No, Sophie," Ethan said softly, his voice full of love. "I'm not pretending anymore. I'm right where I belong."
Under the shade of the ancient oak, where a heavy secret had once rested, a beautiful new life had finally taken root.
