Chapter 9 - The Impossible Task

The custody hearing in the family court of São Paulo was the most terrifying afternoon of Ricardo’s life.

The grandparents' legal team painted a devastating picture of the Mendonza Albuquerque household: thirty-seven nannies in two weeks, emotional instability, panic attacks, psychological regression, and an absentee billionaire father consumed by his tech empire.

When it was Ricardo’s turn to speak, his high-priced lawyers urged him to present financial statements, proof of security, and nanny contracts.

Instead, Ricardo fired his lawyers on the spot. He stood up before the judge, looked directly at his former parents-in-law, and spoke from the absolute depths of his soul.

He spoke of Claris’s final months—how he had tried to buy her cure with billions of reais, only to realize money was utterly powerless against death. He spoke of the suffocating silence that followed her passing, the helplessness he felt as his daughters shattered into pieces, and how he had spent a year running away from his own home.

"I wasn't a father," Ricardo confessed, his voice cracking with raw emotion as tears welled in his eyes. "I was a provider hiding behind an office door. I let my daughters drown in their own grief because I didn't know how to swim in mine."

He turned and pointed toward the back of the courtroom, where his six daughters sat hand-in-hand with Luía.

"I didn't fix this home by hiring another professional," Ricardo continued, his voice steadying with pride. "I fixed it because someone walked through my front gates with courage, patience, and unconditional love. My daughters aren't broken objects. They are healing. And this house is no longer a museum of grief—it is a family."

The courtroom fell into a profound, breathless silence. The judge looked over the glowing psychological evaluation reports submitted by Luía, noting the remarkable recovery of all six girls, especially little Isabela, who had recently drawn a picture of her entire family—including her father and Luía—smiling under a bright yellow sun.

The judge ruled in favor of the father. The custody petition was dismissed with prejudice.
