Chapter 8 - The Shadow Returns

Just as peace finally settled into the Morumbi mansion, the fragile equilibrium was threatened by an external force.
Claris’s parents—wealthy, traditional aristocrats from a prominent old-money São Paulo family—arrived unannounced at the front gates with a team of family lawyers. They had heard rumors about the revolving door of nannies and the "chaos" of the household, and they decided that Ricardo was unfit to raise his own children.
They filed an emergency petition for temporary custody, arguing that six grieving girls needed the "refined, stable environment" of their grandparents' estate in Campos do Jordão, far away from a distracted billionaire father and a revolving staff.
When the legal papers were served, Ricardo’s corporate instincts flared into a panic. He retreated instantly into his cold, defensive billionaire persona, threatening to sue the grandparents into oblivion, hiring a battery of aggressive lawyers, and locking himself in his study.
Sensing the sudden shift in the house's energy, the girls immediately began to regress. Mariana’s posture stiffened into defensive hostility; Laura’s fingers instinctively rose toward her hair. The mansion turned ice-cold once again.
Luía found Ricardo in his study, surrounded by fluttering legal briefs, pacing like a caged animal.
"If you fight them with lawyers and threats, you are proving their point," Luía said firmly, stepping directly into his path, blocking his frantic pacing. "You’re showing the court that this house is a battlefield. If you send your daughters away because you're scared of losing them, you will confirm their deepest, darkest fear: that they are broken items to be discarded when things get hard."

Ricardo stopped pacing. His chest heaved as the raw terror of losing his children washed over him. "What else can I do? They have money, they have social standing, and they have the law on their side!"
"They don't have the girls' hearts," Luía said steadily, placing her hands on his shoulders. "And neither do you, if you keep hiding behind paper."
