Chapter 5 - The Threshold of Change

The turning point for the twins—Beatriz and Bianca—arrived on a stormy Tuesday afternoon.

The heavy rains of São Paulo had overwhelmed the drainage system on the upper terrace, causing a minor leak that began dripping directly through the ceiling of the family library, threatening a collection of rare, first-edition books that had belonged to Claris.

The twins, seeing an opportunity for absolute chaos, decided to accelerate the indoor flood by unplugging a decorative fountain in the winter garden, letting water spill across the parquet flooring. They stood back, giggling maliciously as the water crept toward the bookshelves.

Luía walked into the room carrying a stack of dry towels. She took in the rising water, the dripping ceiling, and the two defiant twins standing with their arms crossed.

Most adults would have exploded in rage. Luía simply sighed, dropped the towels onto a dry patch of floor, and waded right into the middle of the puddle. She grabbed a bucket, positioned it under the leak, and began frantically mopping up the spreading water with her bare hands.

"If we don't move these bottom shelves right now," Luía called out over the sound of the storm, her voice remarkably calm, "your mother’s favorite poetry books are going to dissolve into pulp. Do you want to help, or do you want to stand there and watch your history wash down the drain?"

Beatriz and Bianca froze. They looked at each other, then at the water soaking the hem of Luía’s jeans. The malicious spark in their eyes flickered out, replaced by a sudden, terrifying panic at the thought of losing something of their mother's.

Without a word, Bianca ran forward and grabbed a dry towel. Beatriz joined her sister, hauling heavy volumes off the lower shelves and carrying them to safety. For two solid hours, the maid and the twins worked side by side in silence, drenched and exhausted. When the storm finally passed, the books were saved.

As the twins slumped against the wall, panting and dirty, Luía handed them each a warm mug of cocoa.

"Good teamwork," Luía said simply, tapping her mug against theirs.

It was the first time the twins had smiled at an adult in fourteen months.
