Chapter 10 - Ever After

Five years later.
Snow had fallen through the night once again, turning the Moretti estate into a breathtaking winter wonderland—white gardens behind open, welcoming iron gates, marble steps gleaming, and joyful children playing in untouched paths.
The courtyard was no longer a place of fear or bloody standoffs. It was a playground.
A eight-year-old Emma was carefully rolling a massive snowball across the lawn to build the base of a snowman.
A few feet away, a lively four-year-old boy named Leo—who carried his father’s dark hair and sharp, intelligent eyes—was giggling hysterically as he tried to pile snow on top of a very patient, very old Bruno.
Bruno, now an elderly dog with gray fur silvering his snout, lay contentedly in the snow, allowing the young boy to decorate his back with snowballs, his tail wagging slowly in pure bliss.
From the high glass doors of the sunroom, Alessandro and Sophia stood together, watching their children.
Alessandro wore a dark wool sweater, his hair touched with a few distinguished streaks of silver at the temples. His arm was wrapped securely around Sophia’s waist, pulling her flush against his side. Sophia rested her head on his chest, wrapped in a warm knitted shawl, her face radiating absolute peace and fulfillment.
"He’s getting old," Sophia remarked gently, looking at Bruno.
"He’s lived a good life," Alessandro replied softly, looking at the dog who had saved his soul. "He protected our family when we needed him most. Now he gets to enjoy the peace he helped create."
Leo suddenly lost his balance in his bulky snowsuit, tumbling backward into a soft snowdrift with a loud "Oof!"
Emma sprinted over instantly, helping her little brother up and brushing the snow off his red winter jacket, giving him a big, warm hug.
Alessandro looked at his wife, his dark eyes brimming with a quiet, profound emotion.
"Do you remember the first day you came here?" Alessandro asked quietly.
"I was terrified of you," Sophia admitted with a soft laugh, looking up into his eyes. "I thought you were the most dangerous man in the world."
Alessandro smiled, leaning down to press a soft, lingering kiss against her lips.
"You were right," he whispered against her cheek. "I was dangerous. But I was powerless against a maid and her little girl."
"You weren't powerless," Sophia whispered back, holding his face in her hands. "You were just waiting to be rescued."
Out in the snow, Emma and Leo held hands, running toward the sunroom doors, calling out for their parents to come join them for a snowball fight. Bruno pushed himself up slowly, trotting happily behind them.
Alessandro opened the heavy glass doors, letting the crisp winter air and the bright sound of his children’s laughter fill the warm house.
He stepped out into the snow with his wife by his side, holding her hand tightly in his.
