Chapter 8 - The Healing Hearth

Three weeks later, the gray clouds over the Whitmore estate finally gave way to a brilliant, golden summer sun.
The estate felt entirely transformed. The cold, sterile marble living room was now filled with color and life. Construction crews had opened up the tall French doors leading out to the sunlit terrace, letting the gentle breeze fill the house with the scent of blooming jasmine and lavender.
Halpern’s arrest had led to a complete unraveling of his fraudulent network. The police had recovered the stolen funds, but more importantly, the evidence on Claire’s hidden drive legally proved Halpern’s direct tampering with her vehicle, ensuring he would spend the rest of his life behind bars.
In the living room, a large fire crackled softly in the fireplace—not to ward off cold, but to add a cozy glow.
Rosa stood near the piano, no longer wearing a servant's uniform, but dressed in a warm, elegant beige dress. At the large wooden coffee table, Ethan and Annie were sitting side by side. Between them lay a new, custom-built wooden workbench fitted with small tools, soldering irons, and colorful wires.
Together, they were working on a new project: building custom electronic toys for children in the local children's hospital.
"Pass me the blue wire, Annie," Ethan said, his face bright and glowing with health.
"Here," Annie said, handing it to him with practiced expertise. "Remember, wrap it twice around the pin so it doesn't loosen when the toy bounces."

He walked over to the table and picked up the little red car. It sat cleanly restored, its red paint polished to a mirror shine. On the bottom, Annie had carefully etched three tiny initials into the plastic alongside Claire's: E & A.
