Chapter 5 - A Mother’s Blueprint

At midnight, while the children slept soundly in their respective rooms, Daniel sat in the workshop in the basement with Annie’s guidance.
Despite her age, Annie possessed an intuitive understanding of mechanics passed down from her father. She stood on a wooden step stool beside Daniel at the workbench, pointing with a small wooden stylus.
"See there?" Annie pointed to a micro-circuit hidden beneath the battery cradle. "It’s not just a speaker, Mr. Whitmore. It’s a receiver. My dad used to fix these for radio cars. This red car was built to receive a signal from somewhere else in the house."
Daniel used a magnifying glass to look closer. Printed on the micro-chip were tiny letters written in silver ink: C.W. - 104.5 MHz.
Claire’s initials.
"She built a transmitter," Daniel murmured, realization dawning on him like a sudden strike of lightning. "Claire didn't just leave a recorded message inside a toy. She hid a transmitter somewhere in this house, and this car was designed to play whatever signal it caught when it was near the source!"
"That's why it stopped working when Ethan went to the living room," Annie explained, her eyes sparkling with logic. "The car didn't break! It just moved too far away from the room where the signal is coming from!"
Daniel felt his heart hammer against his chest. Ethan had been playing in the west wing garden earlier that afternoon—right below Claire’s old private painting studio, a room that had been locked shut since her death six months ago.
"Annie," Daniel said, looking at her with profound respect. "You are incredible."
Annie beamed, a tiny dimple appearing on her cheek. "My daddy always said, missing people leave clues behind because they love us."
Just then, Daniel’s phone vibrated on the workbench. It was Richard Vance.
"Daniel," Vance’s voice came through the speaker, tight and urgent. "I finished the preliminary audit. Halpern has been siphoning funds for over a year—over two million dollars. But that’s not all. Two days before your wife’s car accident, she visited an offshore banking firm and filed for a complete third-party audit of the estate’s secondary accounts. Halpern was the sole signatory on those accounts."

Daniel’s blood turned to liquid ice. "Claire discovered what he was doing."
"Yes," Vance said. "And Daniel... the police report from the crash mentioned a mechanical failure in her brake lines. It was ruled an accident due to rain. But if she knew... Halpern had a motive."
