Chapter 2 - Whispers in the Speaker

The static cracked through the silence of the marble living room like dry ice splashing into hot water. Every adult in the room froze. Mr. Halpern’s hand stayed suspended mid-air, his face draining of all color.
Through the tiny speaker, amidst the high-pitched hum of electric interference, came a warm, familiar breath.
"—if you're listening, my sweetest boy... Mommy loves you past the moon and back..."
Ethan gasped, dropping to his hands and knees. His eyes welled with tears that spilled instantly down his cheeks, but this time, they were not tears of anger. "Mommy?" he sobbed, pressing his ear directly against the cold marble next to the open red car. "Mommy, is that you?"
Daniel dropped to his knees beside his son, his tailored suit completely forgotten. His breath caught in his throat. His heart hammered against his ribs like a trapped bird. It was Claire. There was no mistaking the melodic lilt in her cadence, the gentle laugh tucked behind the vowels, the exact phrase she used every single night when tucking Ethan into bed.
"How..." Daniel’s voice cracked, turning to ash. He stared at Annie, whose little hands were still holding the micro-screwdriver inside the tiny chassis. "How is that playing? That toy only had a pre-recorded engine rev and a horn!"
Annie looked up with wide, innocent brown eyes. "My daddy taught me about dual-layer circuit boards," she said softly, her finger gently resting on a tiny silver chip no bigger than a fingernail, hidden right behind the battery housing. "Someone put a second memory drive in here. It wasn't broken, Mr. Whitmore. Someone put a tiny piece of tape over the copper contact so the battery couldn't reach the speaker."
Daniel turned his gaze sharply toward the three technicians, who looked completely bewildered. Then his eyes drifted slowly toward Mr. Halpern.
The estate manager stepped back, his mouth opening and closing silently. "Mr. Whitmore, I... I assure you, we had no idea—"
"Quiet," Daniel snapped, his tone dangerously low. He turned back to the toy. "Annie... can you play it again?"
Annie nodded, gently touching the tiny wire. The static smoothed out, and Claire’s voice filled the high-ceilinged room once more, clear as crystal, echoing off the mahogany walls.
"Ethan, if you're listening to this, it means you found the secret button behind the bumper. I asked your father’s old friend to help me install this little recorder before your birthday. I wanted to make sure that no matter where I am, you always have my voice with you. And Daniel... my love... if you are listening too..."
The recording cut into a burst of harsh radio static, then went silent.
May you like
Ethan clutched the car to his chest, weeping openly, but for the first time in six months, his shoulders were relaxed. He looked at Annie with unadulterated wonder. "You brought my mommy back."
Daniel stared at the small silver tape Annie had pulled out of the toy. The tape wasn't old. It was clean, clear, and intentionally placed to block the connection. Someone hadn't just failed to fix the toy—someone had deliberately silenced it.
