Chapter 4 - The Crack in the Empire

For the next two weeks, the penthouse became a strange haven of domesticity mixed with high-stakes espionage.
While Grace worked, meticulously keeping the penthouse in immaculate order, Lucy spent her afternoons doing her homework at the massive kitchen island. Dominic, who usually spent his days in smoke-filled boardrooms or secluded warehouses, found himself returning home earlier and earlier.
He would sit at the island, watching Lucy struggle with her math homework, occasionally offering a quiet, surprisingly patient explanation.
"You're really smart for a scary guy," Lucy observed one afternoon, chewing on her pencil eraser.
"I am not scary," Dominic murmured, not looking up from his tablet.
"My mom says you are. But she says you have a soft heart hidden under a lot of rocks."
Dominic looked toward the kitchen, where Grace was preparing a light lunch. She caught his eye and immediately blushed, looking down at her cutting board. Over the past fortnight, Dominic had found himself talking to Grace late into the evening. They talked about her struggles as a single mother, his lonely childhood, and the sheer weight of running an empire. For the first time in his life, Dominic felt understood—not feared, not used, but truly seen.
Meanwhile, Marcus’s investigation was bearing fruit, and the results were horrifying.
One evening, Marcus slipped into Dominic's study, his face grim. He laid out a thick manila folder.
"It’s as we feared, Dominic," Marcus said. "Victor has been systematically draining funds from the logistics division for three years. He’s been laundering it through a shell company in the Caymans. But that’s not all."
Marcus slid a photograph across the desk. It showed Victor shaking hands with Dr. Harold Vance—not Claire’s godfather, but a corrupt lab technician with a similar name who worked at the clinic Victor had used to generate the fake DNA report.
"The DNA report was a complete fabrication," Marcus explained. "Victor paid Vance fifty thousand dollars to forge the zero-percent probability. He knew that if you had a child, you would likely step back from the daily operations of the family business to focus on being a father. He wanted you angry, distracted, and alone, so he could stage a coup with the Brooklyn syndicate."
Dominic’s eyes turned to chips of ice. The sheer scale of the betrayal burned through his veins. Victor had been his brother-in-arms. He had allowed this man into his home, his life, and his trust.
"Where is Victor now?" Dominic asked, his voice dangerously low.

"He’s hosting a meeting at the harbor warehouse tonight. He thinks you're still grieving and broken in your penthouse."
Dominic stood up, straightening his cuffs. "Let’s go show him how the Wolf grieves."
