Chapter 9 - Dawn of a New Era

The sun broke through the heavy gray clouds over the Hamptons, casting a warm, golden light across the manicured lawns and the towering oak trees of the Starks estate. The storm had passed, leaving the air crisp, clean, and smelling of wet earth and blooming jasmine.
Inside the grand nursery, the morning light streamed softly through the white sheer curtains.
Lily and Rose sat up in their beds, rubbing their eyes. There was no screeching alarm. No cold dread in the air. No humming monsters hidden in their toys.
The door swung open softly.
Rory stood in the doorway, dressed in a simple white shirt with the sleeves rolled up, carrying a silver tray with two bowls of fresh strawberries and warm milk.
"Daddy!" Lily shouted happily, scrambling out of bed and running over to hug his legs.
"Good morning, my princesses," Rory smiled, kneeling down to wrap his arms around both girls. For the first time in months, the hollow exhaustion in his eyes was completely gone. His face was relaxed, his smile genuine.
"Did the monster go away forever?" Rose asked softly, looking up with wide, innocent eyes.
"Forever and ever," Rory promised, kissing the top of her head. "And he's never coming back."
Downstairs in the sunlit kitchen, Veronica was pouring a cup of freshly brewed black coffee. The financial files had been recovered, the traitors were locked away in secure underground holding facilities awaiting judgment, and the Starks empire was fully secured.
Footsteps echoed softly on the hardwood floor as Rory walked into the kitchen, holding the empty silver tray. He poured himself a cup of coffee and leaned against the marble counter, looking across at Veronica.
"The board of directors met via emergency video call this morning," Rory said quietly. "Vance’s shares have been redistributed. And I formally appointed a new Chief Operating Officer."
Veronica took a sip of her coffee, raising an eyebrow. "Oh? Who’s the lucky person?"
"Someone who knows how to look past the charts, spot the hidden threats, and protect what matters most," Rory replied, his dark eyes warm and steady as he looked directly at her. "Starting salary is triple what I offered you yesterday. And your office is right next to mine."
Veronica smiled, a rare, radiant expression that transformed her face entirely. She set her coffee cup down and wiped her hands on her apron.
"I suppose I can manage that, Mr. Starks," Veronica said softly. "As long as the coffee machine in the executive suite actually works."

Rory laughed—a rich, deep sound that hadn't echoed through the halls of the Hamptons estate in years.
Outside, the birds sang in the morning trees, and the house finally felt like a home again.
