Chapter 2 - The Heart of the Machine

The red pulse didn't flicker like a dying battery. It beat with a steady, clinical rhythm, like a mechanical heart wired to torture two innocent children.
Rory stared at the torn white plush, his breath catching in his throat. The raw, violent anger that usually defined him evaporated instantly, replaced by a cold, sickening horror. Underneath the synthetic stuffing lay a custom circuit board, no larger than a matchbox, soldered directly to a miniature speaker component and a localized high-frequency generator.
"What... what is that?" Rory whispered, his voice dangerously low.
"It’s not a toy," Veronica said, her hands steady despite the adrenaline flooding her veins. She used the tip of the safety scissors to carefully unearth the device, lifting it away from the fluffy white interior.
As soon as the unit was pulled free from the bear, the room's atmosphere shifted. The oppressive, cold weight that had suffocated the nursery seemed to lift instantly. Lily and Rose stopped screaming mid-shriek. Their small, tear-streaked faces relaxed, their heavy eyelids fluttering as an overwhelming, unnatural exhaustion claimed them. Within seconds, both girls slumped against Rory's chest, breathing deeply and peacefully for the first time in eight weeks.
Rory laid his daughters down gently, pulling the soft blankets over their shoulders. Then, he stood up, towering over Veronica. The mafia boss was back, but his eyes burned with a lethal, terrifying focus.
"Explain," Rory commanded, holding out his hand for the device.
Veronica placed the cold, humming piece of technology into his palm. "It’s a specialized audio-frequency transmitter and psycho-acoustic emitter. It plays a continuous, sub-audible tone that humans can't consciously hear, but a child's developing inner ear registers as a continuous, terrifying roar. It triggers the amygdala. Pure terror, on a loop, every single night at the exact same hour."
Rory’s jaw tightened until the bone showed white. "Who ordered it? Who brought it into my house?"
"Susan Thompson," Veronica replied without hesitation. "Your sister-in-law. She brought it in a white box eight weeks ago, claiming it was a custom-made gift from Belgium."

Rory didn't shout. His silence was infinitely more dangerous. He reached into his pocket, pulled out his encrypted satellite phone, and dialed a single digit.
"Marcus," Rory said, his voice dropping to a deadly whisper. "Bring the SUV around. And send a cleanup detail to Susan’s downtown penthouse. We're going visiting."
