Chapter 7 - The Final Chess Piece

The front doors of the Hamptons estate blew inward as Rory Starks stormed into the house, drenched in rain, his suit jacket stained with soot and blood.
"Veronica! Girls!" Rory roared, his voice shaking the chandeliers.
"Upstairs, Mr. Starks!" Veronica called out, stepping out of the nursery doorway, wiping a streak of dust from her cheek. "In the nursery. We have an uninvited guest."
Rory took the stairs three at a time, bursting into the hallway. When he saw Thomas pinned to the floor by his maid, and his daughters still sleeping peacefully in their beds, the last remaining pieces of the puzzle clicked violently into place in his mind.
Victor Vance. His most trusted financial advisor. The man who managed his offshore assets, who had access to every blueprint of the estate, and who had hired Thomas to plant the acoustic emitter and finish the job when the psychological torture failed.
Rory walked over, grabbed Thomas by the collar of his tactical vest, and hauled him to his feet with one hand.
"Where is Vance?" Rory asked, his voice deathly quiet.
"Private airstrip... Teterboro," Thomas choked out, terrified out of his mind. "He's... he's fleeing the country tonight with the final ledger transfer."
Rory dropped the traitor back onto the floor like a sack of garbage. He turned to Marcus, who had just arrived with the backup team.
"Lock down the estate. Secure my daughters. No one enters or leaves." Rory turned his gaze to Veronica, who stood quietly by the nursery door, her posture completely composed despite the chaos. "Veronica. Watch over them. I'm going to finish this once and for all."
"I'm coming with you," Veronica said firmly.
Rory stared at her, stunned. "This isn't a nursery anymore, Veronica. This is a war zone."
"Exactly," Veronica replied, stepping forward with quiet resolve. "And you need someone who can read the data while you handle the guns. Vance has encrypted drives. If you shoot him before we retrieve the decryption keys, your entire financial empire stays locked forever."

Rory looked at her for a long, silent moment. Then, a rare, grim ghost of a smile touched the corner of his mouth.
"Get in the car," he said.
