Chapter 4 - The Penthouse Confrontation

The rain-slicked streets of Manhattan gleamed under the amber glow of streetlights as Rory's convoy cut through the deserted downtown traffic. Inside the lead vehicle, Rory sat in absolute silence, turning the small, blood-red circuit board over and over in his calloused fingers.
Twenty minutes later, the SUVs pulled up in front of a luxury high-rise overlooking Central Park.
Marcus, Rory's head of security, stepped out first, signaling two armed guards to secure the private elevator. They didn't bother using the keycard; a swift, silent breach of the digital lock panel bypassed the security system entirely in less than ten seconds.
The private penthouse was dark, bathed in the cool blue light of the city skyline. Susan Thompson sat on a white velvet sofa wearing a silk robe, swirling a glass of expensive pinot noir, as if she had been expecting company.
"I knew you'd figure it out eventually, Rory," Susan said smoothly, not even turning around as heavy footsteps crossed her Persian rug. "Though I must admit, I thought the girls would crack mentally before you ever cut open the bear."
Rory stepped into her field of vision, his face a mask of frozen fury. He didn't yell. He simply walked over to the glass coffee table and dropped the mangled teddy bear and its exposed electronic core right into her wine glass.
Susan flinched slightly, her lips thinning into a hard line. "You're ruining a very expensive piece of imported fabric."
"Who built it, Susan?" Rory asked, his voice trembling with suppressed rage. "You don't know the first thing about frequency modulation or micro-soldering. Who gave you the device?"
Susan let out a cold, bitter laugh, tilting her head back. "You think I acted alone? You think I’m just a bitter aunt jealous of your perfect little family after my sister died? Wake up, Rory. The Starks empire is built on blood, and your enemies realized that the easiest way to break the most feared man in the city wasn't a bullet to the chest. It was watching your own flesh and blood lose their minds piece by piece."
"Name names," Rory stepped closer, the sheer physical pressure of his presence making the room feel suddenly airless.
"I'll give you a name," Susan smiled wickedly, her eyes gleaming with malice. "Victor Vance. Your own chief financial officer. He's been bleeding your accounts dry and handing the dossiers over to the syndicate. And the device? He bought it from a black-market tech firm called Cyberix."

Before Susan could finish her sentence, a muffled pop echoed through the penthouse foyer.
Marcus burst back into the living room, his pistol drawn. "Boss! We've been compromised! The perimeter guards just went offline, and a hit squad is breaching the service stairwell!"
