Chapter 9 - The Promise at Dawn

The morning of Leo’s second birthday dawned bright and beautiful.

The grand garden of the Valente estate was filled with laughter, colorful balloons, and children playing on the grass. Staff members, former security guards who now worked as legitimate corporate protection, and close friends gathered around long wooden tables laden with incredible pastries, fresh fruits, and artisanal breads created by Brooks and Rye.

Leo ran across the green grass in a tiny suit, chasing his wooden horse, his joyous laughter echoing across the estate grounds.

Mara sat on a white bench under a blooming cherry blossom tree, watching him with a peaceful smile. She felt a profound sense of fulfillment. Her bakery was thriving, backed by new legitimate investments, and the little boy she had saved was now happy, healthy, and safe.

Adrian walked over, carrying two glasses of sparkling peach juice. He sat beside her, handing her a glass.

"He loves you, you know," Adrian said, watching Leo play. "This morning, before I could even open my eyes, he crawled into my bed and asked if 'Mara Bread' was awake yet."

Mara laughed softly, a bright, beautiful sound. "He's a sweet boy, Adrian. You've raised him well."

"I didn't do it alone," Adrian said, his tone turning serious, rich with deep emotion. He set his glass down on the table beside the bench and turned to face Mara completely.

He took both of her hands in his, his large, powerful hands holding hers with extreme gentleness.

"Mara... when my son wouldn't wake up, the entire world offered me money, doctors, and power. But none of it mattered. You came into that room with nothing but your kindness, your sharp mind, and your beautiful heart, and you saved my son's life."

"Adrian..." Mara whispered, her heart beating fast against her ribs.

"I spent my whole life believing that strength meant building walls, holding guns, and trusting no one," Adrian continued, his dark eyes shining with intense love. "But you showed me what real strength is. It's mercy. It's love. It's caring for someone so fiercely that no darkness can touch them."

He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a small, velvet box.

Mara held her breath.

Adrian opened the box. Inside sat a breathtaking ring—not a cold, ostentatious diamond meant for political show like Vivienne's, but a custom-crafted warm gold band set with a brilliant, glowing cushion-cut yellow diamond that looked like a drop of pure, trapped warm sunshine.

"This ring was designed by an artist in Italy," Adrian said softly. "It’s called Il Sole—The Sun. Because that is what you are to me and Leo. You brought the sun back into our dark lives."

Adrian slid down onto one knee on the soft grass before her.

"Mara Brooks... I don't want a contract. I don't want an alliance. I want a family. I want to wake up every single morning smelling cinnamon in my kitchen and seeing your beautiful smile. Will you marry me and be my wife... and Leo’s mother?"

Tears of pure, overwhelming joy spilled down Mara’s cheeks. She looked at the man kneeling before her—a man who had conquered empires, but who now laid his heart at her feet with complete vulnerability.

"Yes!" Mara cried out, her voice filled with emotion. "Yes, Adrian! Absolute yes!"

Adrian stood up, a massive smile breaking across his handsome face. He slid the glowing golden ring onto her finger, fitting perfectly, and then pulled her into his arms, lifting her slightly off her feet and spinning her around under the falling cherry blossom petals.

When he set her down, he cupped her face with both hands and brought his lips down onto hers in a deep, passionate, completely breathtaking kiss that sealed their souls together forever.

Cheering and applause erupted from the garden.

Leo came running over, his tiny legs moving as fast as they could, waving his wooden horse in the air. "Dada! Mara! Hug!"

Adrian let go of Mara just enough to reach down and scoop Leo up into his left arm, while keeping his right arm wrapped tightly around Mara’s waist, pulling her close against his side.

Leo wrapped his little arms around both of their necks, pressing a messy, sweet kiss against Mara’s cheek. "Love Mara!"

"I love you too, my sweet boy," Mara wept happily, kissing his chubby cheek, and then leaning her head against Adrian’s broad shoulder.
