Chapter 7 - The Siege of Valente Memorial

Inside the reinforced bathroom, Mara sat on the floor with her back against the tiled wall, holding Leo tightly in her lap. The little boy had woken up from the noise, his eyes wide with fear, but Mara held him close, rocking him gently and singing a low, soft melody she used when working late nights in the bakery.
"Shh, my sweet boy," Mara whispered, kissing his forehead. "Dada is taking care of everything. We're safe."
Outside the thick steel door, the world exploded into chaos.
Muffled gunshots echoed through the heavy walls, accompanied by the shattering of glass and the heavy thuds of combatants colliding. Sofia Rossi had brought a dozen ruthless mercenaries—the last remnants of the Rossi syndicate—desperate to secure the flash drive and the child before federal authorities closed in.
In the hallway, Adrian Valente moved like a ghost of vengeance.
He fired with terrifying precision, taking down two armed attackers as they rounded the corner. Beside him, Thomas Rivas and three Valente bodyguards held the line, turning the sterile hospital corridor into an impenetrable kill zone.
"Boss! They're using flashbangs!" Thomas shouted, diving behind a heavy medical cart as a blinding light and deafening boom erupted down the hall.
Through the smoke, a figure marched forward—Sofia Rossi, wearing a dark tactical coat, holding a silenced pistol in her hand. Her face was twisted with decades of unyielding greed and hatred.
"Adrian!" Sofia screamed over the alarm. "Give me the flash drive and the boy! The Rossi empire built your foundation! It belongs to us!"
"You sold your own niece to a federal witness protection program because of your greed, Sofia!" Adrian’s voice boomed through the corridor, cold and unyielding. "You poisoned a baby! You aren't taking anything from this room except a body bag!"
Sofia sneered, firing three quick shots into the doorframe behind which Adrian was crouched. "I will tear this hospital down brick by brick!"
She signaled her remaining three mercenaries to advance on the room.
But Adrian was not just a boss; he was a master strategist who knew every inch of his hospital. He pressed a button on a small remote control in his pocket.
Instantly, the ceiling sprinkler systems in the corridor activated, drenching the attackers in high-pressure water, blinding them temporarily. At the same same second, two hidden heavy steel security shutters slammed down behind the mercenaries, trapping them in the narrow hallway with no escape route.
Adrian stepped out from cover, his pistol held steady with both hands.
"Drop your weapons," Adrian commanded.
The three mercenaries, seeing themselves completely surrounded by Valente guards who had appeared from the stairwells behind them, immediately dropped their rifles and raised their hands.
Sofia Rossi, her grey hair dripping with water, her face pale with defeat, glared at Adrian with pure venom. She slowly raised her gun toward Adrian's heart.
"I'd rather die than let a Valente win," she snarled.
BANG.
A single shot echoed down the corridor.
Sofia’s gun clattered to the floor. She dropped to her knees, clutching her shoulder where a precision bullet had disarmed her. Thomas Rivas immediately stepped forward, kicking the weapon away and slamming her face-first onto the wet floor, clicking heavy steel handcuffs around her wrists.
"It's over, Sofia," Adrian said, stepping over her as federal agents, alerted by Elena's long-dormant protocol, flooded the corridor through the main elevators.
Adrian didn't wait to talk to the feds. He didn't care about the press, the syndicate war, or the billions of dollars now returning to his accounts.

He walked straight to the reinforced bathroom door and knocked three times—their secret code.
"Mara," Adrian called, his voice soft, breathless, and entirely human. "It's safe. Open the door."
