Chapter 10 - The Fortune of Mercy

Three years later.
The scent of warm vanilla, rich dark chocolate, and fresh cardamom filled the air of the newly built Brooks & Valente Culinary Institute downtown—a massive, non-profit foundation funded by the restored Rossi trust fortune, dedicated to providing culinary training, business education, and safe housing for single mothers and underprivileged youth in Chicago.
Mara stood near the head of the demonstration kitchen, wearing her white chef’s coat with her name embroidered in gold thread: Mara Brooks-Valente. Her voluptuous figure looked stunning, her face glowing with radiant health, happiness, and love.
Beside her, four-year-old Leo, wearing a miniature chef’s hat that was slightly too big for his head, was proudly helping a group of delighted young students roll out fresh butter dough.
"Remember, everyone," Leo announced with absolute authority, pointing a small wooden spoon at the flour board, "you have to let the dough rest! If you rush it, it won't be sweet!"
The class erupted in warm laughter. Mara smiled, walking over to kiss the top of Leo’s chef hat. "Very good, Chef Leo. You're getting as smart as your father."
"Smarter," a deep, smooth voice purred from the doorway.
Adrian stood leaning against the doorframe, wearing a tailored navy suit, looking impossibly handsome. He had just returned from a board meeting at Valente Global, which was now recognized as one of the leading green shipping and logistics corporations in North America.
He walked down the aisle of the kitchen, taking no notice of the admiring glances from the staff, his eyes locked entirely on his wife.
He reached Mara, wrapping his arms around her waist from behind, resting his chin on her shoulder as he watched Leo guide the other children.
"How was your meeting, Mr. Valente?" Mara asked playfully, leaning back into his embrace.
"Boring," Adrian murmured, kissing her neck softly. "I kept thinking about my wife's cardamom rolls... and how much I wanted to take her home."
"Adrian," Mara blushed, laughing softly as she patted his arm. "We're in the middle of a class!"
"Let the assistant instructors handle the rest of the demonstration," Adrian whispered, his hand gently resting over Mara’s stomach—where a soft, undeniable bump was just beginning to show beneath her chef’s coat.
A second miracle was on the way—a baby girl, expected in the fall.
"Dada!" Leo called out, running over and tugging on Adrian's pant leg. "Look! I made a horse out of bread dough!"
Adrian knelt down, taking the crude, adorable dough-horse from his son's hands with as much pride as if it were a masterpiece made of solid gold.
"It's magnificent, Leo," Adrian said sincerely, giving his son a high-five. "Your mother’s talent is definitely rubbing off on you."
Adrian stood back up, holding Leo in one arm and pulling Mara close with the other. Together, they walked out of the institute into the warm afternoon sunshine of Chicago.
Years ago, Adrian Valente thought his fortune was measured in shipping ports, bank accounts, security squads, and political alliances. He thought safety was built with iron gates and loaded guns.
Now, looking at the glowing, beautiful woman who had captured his heart, the happy son who bounded beside them, and the new life growing in Mara's womb, Adrian knew the truth.
The greatest fortune in the world was never hidden behind locked vaults or syndicate keys.
