Chapter 8 - A Sweet Awakening

The heavy steel door slid open.
Mara stood there, her hair slightly messy, her arms wrapped tightly around Leo, who was sucking peacefully on his thumb, looking completely unbothered by the dramatic rescue.
When Mara saw Adrian—dripping with water, his shirt torn at the shoulder, but completely unharmed—a massive wave of relief washed over her. She couldn't stop herself. She stepped forward and threw her arms around his neck, hugging him tightly.
Adrian froze for a fraction of a second, stunned by the warmth of her embrace, before wrapping his powerful arms around both her and Leo, pulling them against his chest.
"You're safe," Adrian whispered into her hair, smelling the sweet, comforting scent of vanilla and cinnamon that clung to her. "You're both safe."
Leo reached out his tiny hand, patting Adrian's wet face. "Dada! Water!"
Adrian let out a deep, booming laugh—the first real, joyful laugh he had uttered in two long years. He kissed his son’s cheek, then pulled back slightly to look at Mara.
His dark eyes were glowing with an emotion so intense, so raw, that Mara felt her cheeks flush warm.
"Thank you, Mara," Adrian said, his thumb gently stroking her soft cheekbone. "Not just for saving my son... but for bringing light back into this house."
"I just did what my heart told me to do," Mara said softly, leaning into his touch slightly before remembering where they were. She smiled shyly. "And besides... I still have an event contract to fulfill. I think I owe you forty trays of pear cakes."
"Forget the contract," Adrian said, his voice dropping to a seductive, tender murmur. "You're never baking for my events as a hired contractor again."
Mara raised an eyebrow, a slight playful smile touching her lips. "Is that so, Mr. Valente? Are you firing me?"
"No," Adrian murmured, stepping closer, his body heat wrapping around her like a blanket. "I'm promoting you."
Two weeks later, the news hit the front pages of every major newspaper in Chicago and New York.
The Rossi criminal network was completely dismantled by federal authorities, using the vast evidence provided by Elena Rossi’s legacy. Vivienne Ashcroft and her father were facing massive federal grand jury indictments for corruption and money laundering. The Valente logistics empire was officially cleared of all underworld ties, transitioning fully into a legitimate, multi-billion-dollar global corporation.
And at the center of it all was a quiet, beautiful celebration at the Valente estate.
The grand mansion, once cold, imposing, and dark, was now filled with the warm, incredible aroma of fresh bread, roasted pecans, and melted chocolate. The high windows were wide open, letting in the sweet spring breeze off Lake Michigan.
Mara stood in the newly renovated, state-of-the-art estate kitchen—which Adrian had personally redesigned to match her exact dream specifications for Brooks and Rye’s catering expansion. She was wearing a flour-dusted apron over a stunning floral dress that hugged her soft, gorgeous curves perfectly.
Two strong arms wrapped around her waist from behind, pulling her back against a broad, solid chest.
"You're working too hard, mia cara," Adrian whispered into her ear, his lips pressing a warm kiss against the sensitive spot beneath her ear, making her shiver with delight.
"I'm finishing the honey glaze for Leo’s birthday cake," Mara giggled, leaning back against him, placing her hand over his. "He turns two tomorrow, in case you forgot."
"I could never forget," Adrian said, turning her around in his arms so she faced him. He looked down at her with a look of pure, unadulterated adoration.

In the two weeks since the siege, Adrian had transformed. The cold, ruthless Don was gone, replaced by a confident, deeply loving man who spent his mornings playing with his son on the lawn and his evenings watching Mara bake, completely mesmerized by her beauty, her kindness, and her radiant warmth.
"The estate feels like a home now," Adrian said softly, running his fingers through her soft brown curls. "For the first time in my life... it feels like home. Because of you."
