Chapter 3 - A House Divided by Shadows

Damiano did not raise his voice. He reached down, took Isabel by the elbow, and gently helped her to her feet, holding Lily close to her chest.
"Enzo," Damiano called out without turning around.
From the tree line, Enzo Rinaldi appeared almost instantly, his hand resting near his sidearm. He had been watching from fifty yards away, astonished that Damiano had allowed a child to touch him without reaction.
"Boss?" Enzo asked.
"Take Isabel and the child into my private quarters upstairs," Damiano ordered calmly. "Not the servants' quarters. Mine. Place four loyal guards at the door. Nobody enters or leaves without my explicit command. If Renato asks, tell him I am reviewing inventory."
Enzo’s eyes narrowed, but he asked no questions. "Understood."
As Enzo led the terrified mother and child toward the mansion, Damiano turned back toward the ancient oak. His heart thundered against his ribs—not from fear, but from the sudden, cold realization of treachery.
Renato Salvi had been his father’s right-hand man. He was the architect of the syndicate's security. If Renato was working with Marcus Doyle—a low-level enforcer connected to the old Bellandi faction—it meant the foundation of the Vitale empire was rotten from within.
Damiano walked back into the grand house, his boots echoing against the marble floors. He climbed the grand staircase toward his private study, his mind racing. He opened his father’s silver pocket watch, watching the gears turn smoothly. The countdown wasn't just ticking—it was about to hit zero.
Inside his quarters, Isabel sat nervously on a leather sofa while Lily happily played with a silver paperweight on the desk. When Damiano entered, Isabel stood up immediately.
"Mr. Vitale, Marcus is a dangerous man," Isabel said, her voice shaking. "He tracked me here three days ago. He told me if I didn't leave the kitchen doors unlocked tonight, he would take Lily from me."
Damiano walked over and knelt in front of Lily. The child looked up at him without a trace of fear.
"Tell me what you heard, little one," Damiano said, his tone softer than anyone in the syndicate had heard in twenty years.

"Silver-man gave Marcus a paper with numbers," Lily said softly. "Marcus said when the sun goes down, the big gates won't work."
Damiano looked up at Isabel. "Your ex-husband is helping the Bellandi remnants bypass my security grid tonight."
