Chapter 2 - The Whisper in the Sunlit Grass

Damiano Vitale’s fingers froze against the cold steel beneath his lapel. For twenty years, anyone who had dared to come within striking distance of him while his eyes were closed had met a quick, lethal end. Yet here was a child—barefoot, wearing a yellow dress patterned with bright daisies—sitting cross-legged on his ribs, looking into his soul with terrifyingly pure brown eyes.
"Hi, sleeping man," Lily repeated softly, her voice small and sweet.
Damiano didn't move. He barely breathed. "Where did you come from, little one?"
Lily giggled, pointing toward the estate’s massive brick delivery entrance. "Mommy said stay, but the orange flutter-bug went swish. So I followed."
Before Damiano could answer, footsteps pounded across the grass. Isabel Reyes burst through the manicured hedges, her face completely drained of color. When she saw her three-year-old daughter sitting directly on the chest of the Hudson Valley’s most ruthless crime boss, her knees nearly buckled.
"Lily! No!" Isabel gasped, rushing forward and throwing herself onto the grass. She pulled Lily off Damiano’s chest into her arms, covering the child with her body as if waiting for a bullet. "I’m sorry, sir! Please, oh God, please don't hurt her! She’s just a baby—she didn't know!"
Damiano sat up slowly, adjusting his coat. His sharp grey eyes shifted from the trembling woman to the small child clinging to her neck. "Who are you?"
"Isabel Reyes," she stammered, tears streaming down her cheeks. "I work in the back kitchen. I started three weeks ago. My sitter was sick today... I had nowhere else to put her. Please, Mr. Vitale..."
Damiano stood, towering over them, but his posture was devoid of immediate violence. Instead, his gaze lingered on Lily, who peeked out from behind her mother’s shoulder and gave him a tiny wave.
"He's the bad man," Lily whispered, her small voice carrying distinctly in the warm spring breeze.
Isabel’s heart stopped. "Lily, hush!"
"No, Mommy," Lily persisted, pointing her little finger toward the main house where Renato Salvi stood near the second-floor library window, looking down at the lawn through heavy glass. "The man with silver hair. He talks to Marcus in the dark. He said Mr. Vitale is going to go sleep forever soon."
Damiano’s posture turned instantly to ice. The warmth of the afternoon vanished.
"What did you say?" Damiano asked quietly, stepping closer.
May you like
"Marcus," Lily whispered, leaning against her mother. "He tells Marcus where the guns are."
Marcus Doyle. Isabel's violent ex-husband. And the man with silver hair—Renato Salvi, Damiano's most trusted advisor for fifteen years.
