Chapter 2 - Shadows of the Valente Bloodline

The flames from the balcony curtains cast flickering shadows across the walls of the private suite. Roman stood motionless, his fingers trembling slightly as he held the black metal pendant near Clara’s shoulder. The matching halves joined in an eerie symmetry—a physical key to a empire thought to have burned to ashes twenty years ago.

"The Valentes..." Clara whispered, her voice barely audible over the roaring storm outside. "My mother... Eleanor... she told me my father was a tailor who died before I was born."

"Eleanor lied to protect you," Roman said, his dark eyes locking onto hers with an intensity that made her breath hitch. "Twenty years ago, the harbor didn't burn because of an accident. The Valente family was slaughtered in a coordinated strike by a shadow syndicate known as the Black Hand. Your father, Victor Valente, ruled this city with honor. When he died, the syndicate splintered, and my father took control of the Duca syndicate to keep total chaos from swallowing the streets."

A knock shattered the tension. Marco, Roman’s most trusted lieutenant, burst into the room, his tactical vest scorched and stained with soot.

"Boss, the perimeter is secure, but we recovered encrypted comms from the attackers," Marco reported, dropping a blood-stained receiver onto the table. "They weren't targeting you, Roman. They were hired to eliminate her."

Clara’s heart hammered against her ribs. She looked down at her hands, still tied with the cloth Roman had used to bandage her glass cut. All her life, she had lived as an outsider—mocked for her scars, forced into a corner by financial debts, and dragged into a forced marriage with a man who commanded fear with a single glance. Yet here, surrounded by blood and fire, the truth emerged: she was not a pawn; she was the last surviving sovereign of the harbor.

Roman turned to Marco, his command absolute. "Lock down the lower estate. I want Eleanor brought to my study immediately—unharmed, but under guard. No one leaves this island." He then turned back to Clara, offering his hand. "Come with me. It’s time you get the answers you were robbed of."
