Chapter 9 - The Return of Peace

Inside the safety of the limestone mansion, Claire sat on the edge of the grand sofa in the drawing room, holding a cup of steaming chamomile tea. Lily was fast asleep upstairs in her star-painted bedroom, completely unaware of the drama unfolding outside.
The heavy oak door opened, and Vincent walked into the room. He removed his suit jacket, tossing it over an armchair, and loosened his silk tie.
Claire looked up immediately, her green eyes searching his face for any sign of danger. “Is he… is he gone?”
“He is gone, Claire,” Vincent said softly, walking over to pour himself a glass of water. “Permanently. He will never bother you or Lily again. The federal authorities have been notified of his breach, and he faces immediate arrest if he ever steps foot in Cook County again.”
Claire let out a long, shuddering breath, her shoulders collapsing as the heavy weight she had carried for three agonizing years finally lifted off her chest. She set her teacup down, stood up, and walked over to Vincent.
Before Vincent could react, Claire wrapped her arms around his waist, burying her face against his chest.
Vincent froze for a split second, entirely unaccustomed to such spontaneous, unshielded affection. Then, slowly, carefully, his arms came around her, holding her securely against him.
“Thank you, Vincent,” Claire whispered, her voice muffled against his shirt. “For everything. You saved us.”

“You saved yourselves, Claire,” Vincent murmured into her hair, realizing with absolute clarity that the empty limestone mansion had finally become a true home. “You and Lily brought life back into this house.”
They stood there in the quiet warmth of the drawing room for a long time, holding onto each other as the storm outside finally cleared, leaving behind a sky full of bright, unchanging stars.
