Chapter 7 - Shadows from the Past

The calm summer serenity of the Calloway estate was shattered on a humid Tuesday evening in August.
Vincent was sitting in his private study reviewing legal documents when his secure encrypted phone buzzed on the mahogany desk. It was an alert from the perimeter security system—a vehicle had stopped unauthorized outside the main iron gates.
Vincent glanced at the monitor. A battered black sedan sat idling by the entrance pillar. A man stepped out into the glare of the security lights, leaning heavily on a cane, looking disheveled and desperate.
Vincent’s eyes narrowed as he recognized the face from old background dossiers and police records.
Ryan Bennett.
Claire’s legal husband—the man who had abandoned her three years ago, leaving her with crushing gambling debts and a broken heart, before vanishing into the criminal underworld.
Before Vincent could reach for the intercom to instruct security to turn the intruder away, the study door clicked open.
Claire stood on the threshold, her face instantly draining of all color. She was trembling from head to toe, clutching a stack of freshly laundered linens against her chest as if they could shield her from a ghost.
“He’s… he’s here,” Claire whispered, her voice shaking violently.
Vincent stood up instantly, rounding the desk in two long strides. He placed a steadying hand on her shoulder. “Calm down, Claire. He cannot touch you here. You are safe.”
“You don’t understand, Mr. Calloway,” Claire choked out, tears spilling down her cheeks. “Ryan… he’s the one who owed money to Gordon’s syndicate associates. He signed my name to illegal promissory notes before he ran. If he’s here, it means he thinks there’s still money to take, or… or he wants to use Lily to get to us.”
Vincent’s jaw tightened into a rigid line of cold steel. The protective fury that had surfaced months ago roared back to life, hotter and more lethal than before.

“He will not touch Lily. He will not touch you,” Vincent stated, his voice a low, dangerous rumble. “Stay here in the study, Claire. Lock the door behind me.”
Without waiting for her reply, Vincent turned and walked out of the room, his hand sliding instinctively toward the holster beneath his jacket.
