Chapter 8 - The Reckoning at the Gate

The heavy iron gates of the Calloway estate stood open just wide enough for the perimeter guard booth intercom to pick up the raspy, desperate voice of Ryan Bennett.
“Let me in!” Ryan shouted, pounding his fist against the reinforced steel bars. “I know my wife is in there! I know she’s living in luxury with that billionaire crook! She owes me half of whatever she’s got!”
Two armed estate security guards stood in front of him with impassive expressions, blocking his path.
“Step away from the gate, sir,” the lead guard warned, resting a hand on his baton. “You are trespassing on private property.”
“I’m her husband!” Ryan snarled, his eyes bloodshot and frantic. “I have rights!”
“You surrendered your rights the day you walked out on a pregnant woman and left her to wolves,” a deep, chilling voice echoed from the shadows of the driveway.
Vincent stepped through the security lights, walking with slow, deliberate authority. His dark tailored suit contrasted sharply with the white glare of the overhead floodlights, and his cold gray eyes pierced through Ryan like daggers.
Ryan recoiled slightly, intimidated by the sheer aura of absolute power radiating from the Chicago North Side’s most feared businessman.
“You… you’re Calloway,” Ryan stammered, trying to regain a defiant posture. “Stay out of this. Claire is my wife. Legally, her earnings belong to our household.”
“Claire’s earnings belong to Claire,” Vincent said, stopping two paces away from the trembling man. “And more importantly, you have no legal standing, no marital rights, and no business setting foot on my property. Your fraudulent promissory notes were invalidated by federal investigators months ago, and your syndicate associates are currently serving federal prison sentences alongside Gordon Pike.”
Ryan’s face twisted in panic. “You ruined everything! I just wanted what was mine!”
“You want nothing,” Vincent said, signaling the guards with a subtle flick of his wrist. Four heavy-set men stepped forward instantly, pinning Ryan’s arms behind his back before he could lunge forward.

“Get him off my property,” Vincent commanded coldly. “And if he ever comes within a mile of this estate again, ensure he spends the rest of his natural life answering to federal marshals for wire fraud and domestic abandonment.”
As Ryan was dragged away, kicking and screaming obscenities into the humid night air, Vincent stood in the center of the driveway, adjusting his cuffs. The threat was neutralized. The past was finally, truly dead.
