Chapter 8 - The Legacy Transformed

Five years later.
The city had changed. The dark, dangerous industrial districts that had once been controlled by violent gangs had undergone a massive urban renewal project funded entirely by the Vale Foundation. Old, abandoned warehouses were converted into community centers, youth sports complexes, and vocational training schools.
The name "Dominic Vale" was no longer spoken in hushed, terrified whispers in back alleys. It was carved in stone above the entrances of children’s hospitals, public libraries, and animal shelters across the state.
On a bright autumn afternoon, a grand opening ceremony was being held at the newly constructed Julian Vance Memorial Center for Children and Rescue Animals—a massive, state-of-the-art facility located on the exact site of the alley where Dominic had found Elena five years ago.
Hundreds of city residents, news reporters, and local leaders gathered around the outdoor stage. Banners fluttered in the crisp autumn breeze, and music played softly over the loudspeakers.
Behind the stage, thirteen-year-old Elena stood nervously in a tailored navy-blue dress, adjusting her hair in a wall mirror. Beside her, Bear—now an older, distinguished dog with grey fur around his muzzle—sat calmly, his head resting against her knee.
Dominic walked up behind her, putting a gentle, reassuring hand on her shoulder. He looked polished and distinguished, a few streaks of silver at his temples, but his posture was relaxed, his face open and kind.
"Nervous?" Dominic asked with a warm smile.
"A little," Elena admitted, looking up at him. "There are so many people out there. What if I forget my speech?"
"You won't," Dominic assured her, kneeling down to look her in the eye. "Just speak from your heart. Tell them why we built this place. Tell them about the little girl in the mustard sweater, and the brave dog who wouldn't leave her side."
Elena smiled, reaching into her pocket and fingering the polished brass pocket watch she carried with her everywhere. "You'll be right there?"
"I am always right behind you, Elena," Dominic said softly. "Always."
The master of ceremonies announced her name over the microphone. The crowd burst into warm, enthusiastic applause.
Elena took a deep breath, patted Bear’s head, and walked confidently out onto the sunlit stage. Bear trotted calmly by her side, standing right beside the podium as she stepped up to the microphone.
Dominic stood in the wings, watching her. Marco walked up beside him, leaning against the wooden framework of the stage with a satisfied smile.

"Look at her, Boss," Marco murmured, his voice thick with pride. "She commands the room without firing a single shot or raising her voice. She's a true Vale."
"No," Dominic corrected softly, his eyes shining with pride as he watched his daughter address the crowd. "She's better than a Vale. She's the future."
