Chapter 7 - A Home Built on Light

Spring fully bloomed across the city, turning the estate’s sprawling grounds into a vibrant tapestry of emerald grass, blooming cherry blossoms, and sunlit stone pathways.

Dominic walked down the stone steps leading into the gardens, dressed not in his usual formal black suit, but in a comfortable grey sweater and slacks. In his hand, he carried a small, wrapped wooden box.

At the far end of the lawn, near a large oak tree, Elena was running with Bear. The dog was chasing a red rubber ball, barking happily as he leaped through the high grass, his tail wagging furiously in the warm afternoon sun. Elena’s bright laughter rang out across the garden—a sound that made every guard posted along the perimeter walls smile quietly to themselves.

"Elena!" Dominic called out, his voice warm.

The girl turned, her face lighting up with an instant, brilliant smile. "Dominic!" she shouted, turning and running across the lawn toward him, Bear bounding right at her heels.

She threw her arms around his waist, hugging him tightly. Dominic reached down, scooping her up into his arms effortlessly, tossing her slightly into the air before holding her secure against his shoulder. Bear sat down at Dominic’s feet, panting happily and nudging Dominic’s leg with his wet nose.

"Look what Bear found in the pond!" Elena said excitedly, pointing toward a shiny blue pebble she was holding in her pocket. "He tried to catch a frog, but the frog was too fast!"

"I am sure the frog was very relieved," Dominic chuckled, walking over to a wooden bench under the shade of the oak tree and sitting down with her.

He set the small wrapped box on her lap. "This arrived today. It's for you."

Elena looked at the box with wide, curious eyes. She carefully unwrapped the ribbon and lifted the wooden lid. Inside, resting on a bed of blue velvet, was her father's brass pocket watch.

It had been fully restored. The cracked glass had been replaced with crystal-clear sapphire; the brass casing had been polished until it gleamed like pure gold in the sunlight; and inside, the delicate mechanical gears had been repaired, oiled, and restarted.

Tick. Tick. Tick. Tick.

The watch kept perfect, steady time.

Elena picked up the watch, holding it in her palm. Tears welled up in her eyes, but they were no longer tears of fear or grief—they were tears of quiet, comforting remembrance.

"It works," she whispered, holding the watch up to her ear to listen to the gentle, rhythmic heartbeat of the brass mechanism.

"Your father spent his life making sure you would have a future, Elena," Dominic said softly, wrapping his arm around her shoulders. "He wanted this watch to guide you when things were dark. Now, it's just a reminder that he is always with you."

Elena turned the watch over. Engraved on the polished back casing were new words, freshly etched alongside her father's initials:

To Elena. Protected by love, guided by time. - Dominic

She pressed the watch against her heart, then leaned her head against Dominic’s chest, listening to the steady, calm beat of his heart underneath his sweater.

"I have two daddies now," she whispered softly. "One in heaven, and one right here."

Dominic closed his eyes for a moment, letting the weight of those words settle deep into his soul. The man who had once believed he was incapable of love felt a warmth so profound it filled every quiet corner of his heart.
